Merit Scholarship Thank You Letter?

I've received a merit scholarship from the university I am attending in the fall. Should I write a thank you letter? The university hasn't asked to write one, and it might be strange just to send a random thank you letter. Keep in mind, this is not a private scholarship, it's a merit scholarship. I don't know what to do. Help!

Your mama raised you right! You can and should write a letter. I would put the head of admissions, head of fin aid and the prez on the email.

Nice impulse. Not necessary (or expected) in this case. The university didn’t offer you this scholarship in order to be nice. They offered it to try to entice you to go there instead of elsewhere. They were acting in what they perceived to be the university’s interest.

Congratulations on your scholarship.
