What are the qualifications and stats of people that have gotten large merit scholarships at Rice? Are great stats (4.0, 2300, etc) and decent EC's usually enough to get half tuition or more, or do scholarships go to the truly outstanding, HYPSM-caliber students that Rice wants to lure away?

^I don’t get it… what’s not truly outstanding about 4.0, 2300, and decent EC’s??
Silly you. :)

From what I can tell, both by reading stuff, and through my own kids’ application experiences with Rice, their scholarships are hard to figure. Very little is published about them – as you’ve probably noticed. And there seems to be no set, predictable pattern as to who gets them.

My own sons got very large scholarships in years past – like mid-20 thousands. Very, very generous. We were honored and grateful. But we still found that we could not afford Rice, and that other schools who offered full-tuition were better choices for their circumstances. So I’ve never had a kid attend.

My sons’ stats, btw, were similar to yours, with probably “excellent” EC’s as opposed to “decent.” (Maybe your EC’s are “excellent,” too. After all, you don’t seem to consider your stats as excellent, and they are! )
