I suspect you will be hearing in the near future regarding merit scholarships. I have never heard of anyone accepted into the Honors Program that did not receive some level of merit aid. If your scores are extremely high you might even be invited to the scholarship weekend for evaluation for some of the extremely high scholarships (Dupont Scholarships and others-some of which provide full tuition, room/board, books, and even a stipend). Good luck.
@SpaceCoastMom I just got a separate letter in the mail notifying me about a merit scholarship. I’d say it came about 3 weeks after the decision notification.
Thank you, letter came yesterday. $11K per year. High stats, we were hoping for more. But, her list has to get whittled down somehow…sad to see UD come off.
Unfortunately, their web site indicates that $11K is the highest scholarship that they give unless you’re invited for one of the full tuition scholarships. For a public school, UD is quite expensive.
I would assume that the money UD has available for merit scholarships is a relatively fixed amount. The amount available for OOS students is compounded by the fact that the UD student body is comprised of over 2/3 rd’s of OOS students (the opposite compared to probably all other Flagship State Universities), so the available money has to be spread out among a much larger number of accepted OOS applicants. When you are comparing costs you need to compare costs at other similar Flagship State Universities, not to public universities in general. I think you if compare UD’s OOS cost to these other schools in the mid-Atlantic area (I.e. Rutgers, Maryland, Virginia, Penn State) the OOS costs are reasonably similar (I did not say exactly the same, some are a small amount lower or higher). UD and all these other schools are all public “Ivy’s” - so IMHO you get what you pay for (as long as a student applies themselves).
For OOS students that do not receive any merit scholarships, I would agree. But in my daughter’s case, the lack of any merit money from Penn State and a generous offer from UD made the two schools pretty comparable. And as @stealthposter mentioned above, she participated in the Summer Scholars program and also received a surprise scholarship towards her Study Abroad trip. Add in an alumnus scholarship (another surprise) and we’re pretty darn happy with the cost of her UD education.
