Merit Scholarships

Son spoke to scholarship office. He was invited to attend the Shipman Scholarship weekend March 28-30. He was told 30 students were invited, 16 from LSA. Best part, he is guaranteed $35k/ year as an OOS shipman scholar!! The competition is for an additional $5k/ year. I am proud, shocked, excited! I was not expecting this at all but we are thrilled.

Congrats to your son, @Musicmom2015ā€Œ! Looks like this is the first great news of this class in terms of merit scholarships :slight_smile:

Thank you!

Any other calls for Shipman?

I was also offered the Shipman scholarship (as an in-state prospective student). I was not expecting this at all and I feel incredibly honored, even though this will make my ultimate decision more difficult than I had anticipated.

@ViridisFloe Congratulations ā€“ Iā€™m sure all of your colleagues would like to have their decisions complicated by offers of significant merit aid! Are you in LS&A, and could you tell us when you heard? Thanks!

Thank you, @Arlmom2ā€Œ! I am very blessed to be in such a conundrum. I have been admitted to LS&A and I will also audition at SMTD. I received the call regarding the scholarship this past Thursday.

Congrats to the potential Shipmen!

@ViridisFloeā€Œ - Are you thinking dual degree, or will you choose between LSA and SMTD?

@MomOf2TeenGirlsā€Œ, I would pursue a dual degree between the two schools should I choose to attend UMich.

Good luck with your audition, @ViridisFloeā€Œ . My D2 is a Freshman pursuing double degrees in COE and SMTD. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions along your decision journey and Iā€™ll try my best to help you out.

@Musicmom2015
Wow, $35K per year. I thought I was a happy dad until I saw your post.
My son was offered The Engineering Scholarship of Honor for $20,000 per year.

Shipman is definitely more competitive than the Engineering Scholarship of Honor. However, the latter requires no effort (off course you need to have the qualification). For in state students, the Engineering Scholarship of Honor is only $8000 while the equivalent in LSA is $10,000. They are both $20K for OOS though. Never understand why as CoE is already more expensive than LSA to begin with.

Just wondering if anyone else has been notified of their scholarships. My son is hoping for either the Engineering Honors or the Joseph M. Geisinger scholarship,but has not heard anything.

We plan to attend one of the upcoming Campus Days, but would like to know where things are at with the scholarships. If they have been awarded and he did not receive one, no reason for us to make the trip as he will not be able to afford Michigan as a full pay OOS.

@Ryan33
A daughter of our friendā€™s friend is currently going to Michigan as an OOS without anything.
She is paying something like $65K per year.
Itā€™s just outrageous.

My son graduated in May. He did get a scholarship ($40K) and, as I recall, it came well after he was admitted and was a complete surprise. I think it even came after we sent in our deposit. Now that my daughter is accepted and plans on attending, Iā€™m hoping something comes in for her but Iā€™m not expecting anything yet. Although itā€™s the school sheā€™s chosen, Iā€™m holding off sending in the deposit so they donā€™t think ā€œSheā€™s coming anyway, why give her $?ā€ Truthfully, I doubt thatā€™ll make much of a difference, but thereā€™s no rush. Bottom line is, you really donā€™t know when or if a scholarship might be offered, and you might not know for a while, so Iā€™d suggest going to Campus Day.

She was offered $44K from another school and Iā€™ve heard of people using other offers like that as leverage with their school of choice to see if they can at least come close to matching it. Itā€™s probably worth a try.

How does one hear about scholarships after being accepted? My parents canā€™t afford 65k a year

@kobrex

Was that $40,000 per year? Wow, thatā€™s great.
Whatā€™s the name of the scholarship?

Michigan offered my son Engineering Scholarship of Honor in the amount of $20,000 per year.
$45,000 ($65,000 - $20,000) per year is still a lot of money.

My son really wants to go there.
So I will probably negotiate with them.

We got a letter (snail mail). I think it was called a Tribute Scholarship and it was only for OOS students. That was almost 5 years ago, so things may have changed. The scholarship was for $5K per semester, so $40,000 total. It wasnā€™t for $40K per year. (If onlyā€¦)

Another Shipman mom checking in here! Congrats to @Musicmom2015 and @ViridisFloe also! My D will attend the Shipman weekend, but not without some heart-stopping drama. She will miss the last two performances of her school musical. We thought that her director would kick her out of the play, but he was very nice and congratulated her on the scholarship!

Did any Shipman Scholars receive the information in the mail yet? We have not received anything. Only the email and phone call so far.
