Merit Scholarships

@ClueBus

Congratulation!
What are your D’s stats?
What’s her major?

@StevenToCollege‌ what were your son’s stats to get the Engineering Scholarship of Honor?

Congrats to @ClueBus‌, @ViridisFloe‌, and @StevenToCollege‌ on your kids’ scholarships too! :slight_smile:

@nagintapls

They were: GPA 4.61/4.00 and SAT 2330.

@StevenToCollege D’s stats: 4.0 UW, 4.3 W, 36 ACT, 2330 SAT (1590 M + CR) and summer research experience.

@ClueBus

Thanks for the info.
But what’s her intended major if you don’t mind me asking?

For Shipman, we only got the phone call and email but I don’t know if they also send regular mail. The email was pretty thorough. @cluebus, glad it worked out! I was afraid it was going to be all-state weekend here but luckily the dates were clear. My son will fly in Friday night. He is very excited. Congrats to everyone!

@StevenToCollege, D is LSA and a science major. That’s as specific as I want to get, hope that’s OK!

I think only the final winning notice would be by mail.

Got the Shipman letter in the mail today. It outlines the Shipman portion of the scholarship, and refers to the same link we already have for registering for the weekend. When I called the office last week, they said the departmental
(i.e. LSA) portion of the scholarship will come in a separate mailing next week.

@musicmom2015 - congrats! I think you posted on the music thread last year about dual degrees…does this mean your son is considering a dual degree at Michigan? My son had a few friends at the music school who dual-degreed in Engineering and performance, and had also started out in a dual degree himself, though he later chose to focus on music.

Either way, if he ends up choosing Michigan, he will end up in an environment with awesome musical opportunities to pursue!

Congratulations to all of you, btw. No small feat to get merit at Michigan.

@kmcmom13‌. My son decided against dual degrees, at least to start. He wants to major in some type of science but remain very involved in music. He had a chance to meet the music professor for his instrument and have a lesson this past summer while in NYC. He told him how much he enjoys teaching students that are majoring in other topics and my son got a good feeling. He actually wrote part of his essay about this which I think showed how sincere he was about MI. The scholarship was a welcome surprise and he is excited to visit in March. He also is still waiting to hear from a lot of other schools so I have no idea where he will end up!

Anyone from College of Engineering get notified of their Shipman scholarship award?

It seems only LA announced its candidates.

^LSA **

@viphan‌ It may be hard to get another Shipman recipient to response here.
@Musicmom2015 What kind of instrument your son play? There is a POPS orchestra for non music major. I know the concert master who is an engineering major.

@billcsho‌ I was indirectly notified & congratulated by one of the engineering faculty who heard from her colleague of my invitation to the Shipman Scholars Weekend. But I did not get any official confirmation – both in mail or phone call – as to whether I actually got invited.

Again, it seems as if only the LSA acceptees were invited thus far. I’m sure I’ll get an acknowledgement in the distant future, hopefully next week. Good luck to the rest of the applicants!

@viphan‌
You were at the Leadership Weekend! (not sure yet who you are, but you know me. #Idaho :slight_smile: ). Hoping for Shipman here, but it’s super competitive so I’m not too hopeful.

@ARandomGeek‌ How can I possibly forget #TheIdaho? It was nice meeting you!

The thing is, there is really nothing one can do after submitting the application for any automatic, merit-based scholarships (Shipman etc). I’m anxiously waiting on the official news from the admissions office – where all the mysteries occur. :smiley:

I am officially confirming my Shipman nomination from CoE – it came in a small envelope. No calls or emails. Extremely grateful! :smiley:

Edit: For those who are wondering: For 2015-2016 academic year, in-state nominees will receive $15,000 / yr and OOS $25,000 / yr. The 15 / 50 selected during the weekend in March will receive additional $5000.

Congrats @viphan! Just out of curiosity, what are the dates for the weekend? March 6-7?
