Merit Scholarships

How many national merit scholars are accepted to the university each year? I'd like to know my chances at getting the full tuition merit scholarship...

UIUC does not have any merit scholarships earmarked for National Merit Scholars. It awards very few (often less than 5 to none at all) full ride merit scholarships. It does have a lot of partial merit awards for highly qualified applicants, but the amounts generally range from only from about $500 to $5,000 per annum, not enough to even cover tuition, with most in lower part of that range.

look at the provost scholarship.

Going with the same idea: U of I Admissions: Scholarships for select freshmen in any academic discipline, based on academic excellence

All the National Merit scholarships are listed under "Illinois Residents"... I'm OOS, and I listed UIUC as my college choice. Does that mean I'm not eligible even though UIUC was on the list of participating colleges?

Thanks!

well i've got 3000 so far from 2 separate awards but i tend to think theres not too much in the way of funds because our stae of illinois is in a craphole financially

Really. I've gotten 14K (4x renewable) plus another smaller amount non-renewable so far from 3 different scholarship. There are also a bunch I haven't applied for... but I was just wondering specifically for the National Merit Awards.

aurona...i don't know what awards you got, but for highly competitive oos applicants there is usually(from what i hear) somewhere around 10k more to make up the difference. Not that U of I has no funds, but in comparison to years past, its pretty meager for a top 10 public university

and as far as i know, U of I uses your admissions app as a scholarship app so there's little if anything in the way of scholarship apps for incoming freshman. As for national merit, I had that as well but if they give anything for that I would assume it comes a bit later once they receive all the info from nat'l merit corp.

According to this thread, 84 NMS went to U of I last year.

I saw that Provost thing, but I totally missed the "in-state" header and got all excited and submitted U of I as my first choice. Now I realize that its in-state only and I feel like a complete IDIOT. Does U of I give ANY national merit money to out of staters? I couldn't find anything on their website...

Does anyone know how selective the $12,000 OOS scholarship is? It's the only OOS scholarship listed. I know it's a large scholarship, but you have to put it in the perspective of the OOS tuition. In short, it can determine whether or not I'm going to be able to afford going there!

I just received the University Achievement Scholarship which is $12,000 a year if that is what you are talking about.
I know several of people that have 30+ ACTs and only got $1500. The highest I've heard was a $5000 scholarship.
Is this also the largest scholarship for an OOS student?

Yeah, that's it. It's the only OOS scholarship they give. It's much larger than the other scholarships because it is designed to cover most of the additional cost of the OOS tuition.

Are the other students you are talking about also OOS?

My stats aren't as good as yours though. I have a 32 ACT and 4.0 weighted GPA. My school doesn't rank, so I have now clue how UIUC estimated mine because I know they don't use GPA.

Congrats on NHD though. I was a national finalist for my documentary once and I'm doing it again this year.

Thanks :) NHD was a pretty interesting experience. The other students I am talking about were OOS. My brother, also OOS, received 0 scholarships from U of I, but my parents still let him go.

Maybe my parents would let me go without additional scholarships if UIUC wasn't already beaten in price. Because U-Miami gave me a scholarship and I get additional money from Florida for staying in-state, Miami actually ends up cheaper than U of I, which is kind of ironic because Miami is one of the most expensive private schools out there.

I got an email saying I was put on the College of Business Honors program-which would be 8000 per year. But I was notified of being selected for the James Scholars Honors Program- 12,000 per year for all 4 years.

32 act, 1410 sat, 3.8-my school doesnt give AP/honors class much weight at all

Were you notified of the scholarship through the college of business or UIUC in general? Are you talking about the University Scholarship for OOS students? I'm looking at the business website and it doesn't say anything about a special scholarship for James Scholars.

To Ec10:

Were any of the other people you knew with 30+ ACT scores also James Scholars?

Asst. Dean Hedeman sent me the email saying I was waitlisted for the COB Honors Program. Then said I was accepted into the Jamer Scholars Honors Program.

I didnt read the next paragraph closely enough...the 12000/year is the University Achievement Scholarhsip. Sorry about the confusion

Interesting.....I have similar stats. There is hope! LOL. I applied to DGS though, so I'm not sure if that can change my chances. Now I guess I just play the waiting game for my financial aid letter.

the email said id be getting the scholarship package in a few days..not sure if they send them out at the same time or not. Good Luck! I think I had solid EC's but nothing ridiculous like half of the people on here have
