mellow~ they count ALL aid as an award, so the added $3,500 they listed is a LOAN, not scholarship. so you have pure, free money in the amount of 22k, with more via loan if you decide to take it.
momomthehill~ yup...in packet and student portal.

My portal isn't updated, but I received a package in the mail like mellow. The Frederick Douglass Scholarship. I'm really bummed about not making honors, and it's because there is just general grade deflation at the HS I attend.

swmass - -

Your statement regarding an automatic 25K for honors students is slightly inaccurate. I was accepted into the honors program, but my portal says I only received a Deans Scholarship of 9000

mellow and willact4food, did you guys click the link for the 2007-2008 school year? It might show there if you didn't check.

Nichole,

In my previous post I said "most" honors students will be awarded with Presidential Scholarships. Some may get Deans Scholarships, as is your case. And I believe your $9000 scholarship is for one semester. As far as I know, most (if not all) Deans Scholarships are $18,000 a year. So check your portal again to see whether your scholarship is for Fall 2007 or the entire 07-08 school year.

I have yet to meet an honors student with less than $18k a year. If you really only got $9k for the whole year, then that really destroys AU's reputation for merit aid.

swmass - -

I misunderstood your post...I first read it to mean that all honors students received 25K, but can see that it meant most. And, looking back on the thread, I see that you said that some might end up with 18K.

And, yes, the 9K is only for fall. The portal won't let me view spring (well, when I try to it doesn't list any scholarships) , so I was a little confused about the specifics.

Sorry if I came off sounding annoyed or rude...I'm actually just mad at the postal service for not bringing my packet today! I'm dying to go through it...

The portal isn't working for me, as far as it is concerned I not even accepted as of yet.

Today in the mail my daughter got her acceptance packet (email came yesterday). She did not get honors but still got $17000 in scholarship and $2000 in work study. She did get an invite to the University College program but we don't really understand that yet....

I got an $18k "Dean's scholarship", and it came with the acceptance packet.

My D got her packet today, got into Honors with the Dean's Scholarship but no offer of work-study, just the loan. And by the way, swmass, $18,000 a year is nothing to feel "unlucky" about. We are thrilled. It will make this school an option now.

seb123~ please see my post under "university College" started by Heavenwood for some comment on University college.

caruth~ i SO agree with you! any money is a thing to be proud about. and just for the record, it seems a little strange to be hearing some kids getting picky/dissatisfied with FREE MONEY OF ANY KIND!!!! MANY SCHOOLS, GOOD ONES, DON'T GIVE ANY AT ALL, EXCEPT FOR CERTAIN GROUPS!
YOU GUYS ARE GETTING A LOT OF MONEY HERE AS I READ YOUR POSTS!!!!!!!

I didn't even do a FAFSA and I don't come from any of those places you mentioned. The only reason I might have gotten the F. Douglas Scholarship is because of extraordinary academic credentials. I don't fit any of the other criteris you mentioned.

dulce - In one of my recent posts, I pasted something I found on the AU website. It said that the F. Douglass Scholarship is under need-based but under few circumstances they will grant it to merit-deserving minorities.

Thank God I filled out my FAFSA, lol! Thanks for posting that, mellow. I had no idea what the F. Douglass scholarship actually was and how I got it.

So i found my award amount under the financial aid part of my portal found a 13,000 AU GRANT but no merit based scholarships, do they list the merit based somewhere else or is that all i got? if so i guess i wont be coming to american ...:/

omg! dean's scholarship of 18k/year and a federal loan of 3,500/year! nice..totally wasn't expecting that since i didn't get into honors. now AU is definitely a possibility for me!

anyone get more than the frederick douglass 22000 not including loans etc

I just checked and I got the Presidential Scholarship ($25K). I was looking under 2006-2007 the entire time and didn't realize they had already posted my FA offer.

Can anyone answer this...how do two different people, one in Honors and one not, get the same scholarship?? Does it swing between need-based and merit-based?? I don't understand...Referring to the Deans Scholarship.
