Merit Scholarships

Hi all, I have two quick quesitons:

1) Does NYU offer merit scholarships to international students?

2) Is it easier to get scholarships if you apply for CAS rather than Stern? Or is the scholarship based on the whole university?

I just called Undergraduate Admissions. I quote from the person who answered the phone:

We rarely do [give out merit scholarships to international applicants]. We do not suggest that students count on [receiving one].

Hope that clears things up.

darn.. so basically, they just want international kids with rich parents. Doesn't NYU get tons of endowments from its rich and famous alumni like Bloomberg and Giuliani?

Not really. And if they did, they'd probably want to spend the money on buildings or professors. And if they wanted to spend the money on student financial aid, they'd spend it on American citizens.

The South Korean NYU undergrads I knew were all the sons and daughters of the chaebol CEOs and such. They paid 100% to attend NYU.

if you applied to stern there will be no merit scholarship, but rather replaced with need based scholarship.

The comment above me is not true. I just got accepted to Stern and I have been awarded a $15000 scholarship for the year.

i was awarded $30k from stern called "stern scholarship"

are any of you international students who posted above about getting scholarships?

Just to clear things up... scholarships aren't necessarily MERIT scholarships, and even if they are, international students are probably not in the running for them.

Hey guys... are the scholarships renewable?

Any Stern scholarships are not purely merit scholarships. There is always a degree of financial need there (as in, you only qualify if you qualify for financial aid). Believe me, I know this for sure, since I spent last Thursday's common hour listening to the dean tell us that there are and will not be any merit scholarships at Stern (they were re-routed two years ago to other things, probably financial aid).

So yes, answering one of the original questions, it would be easier to get a merit scholarship from CAS than Stern. :D
