I've been going through the NYU website, but it doesn't go over specifics on scholarships. My question is, how good do you have to be to get these scholarships and how much money do they cover?

I don't think anyone here is in a position to tell you how good you have to be to get those scholarships. I got one of the top scholarships to CAS - it's supposedly awarded to the top 5% or so of the entering class - and to this day, I have no idea why. I once asked a rep from the Office of Admissions, and she gave me a funny look and said, "Well, then, you must have been in the top of the entering class."

Maybe other people on this board who got great scholarships to NYU can give you some ideas, but frankly, I don't have any.

idk all i got was 15k for "stern scholarship" and it may sound a lot now, but that's only about 30% of the entire budget (50k). the rest was work study (4k) and three different loans (31k)...i mean, i knew nyu was stingy, but geez, anyone know how to appeal this?

$15k is a lot. You got much more than other people. You can appeal, if you like, but based on my own experience - when my sister applied to NYU - when you try to appeal, at the Office of Financial Aid they'll smile nicely and tell you to take it or leave it. It seems to me that appealing because you don't like your package isn't very effective.

my family's income is around 50k more or less...but thanks for the tip, shades. guess i'll have to start writing some essays or something.

one more question - how do schools determine if you qualify for grants? aka pell grants?

wow, at least you got a lot more than I did. I only got $1,000 in Stern scholars, 2K work-study, and the rest in loans

How much was your scholarship? I got deferred at Wharton, would that put me in the top 5%?

I got 10k through the CAS Scholarship and 10k through the J Eckhouse Scholarship..for a total of 20k.. and my stats aren't even that good...

My son got 15K trustee and 15K Carroll and Milton Petrie scholarship (He is a currently a freshman in CAS). You don't apply separately, they go by the FAFSA and your college application. His combined SAT was 2250 (790 math, 730 verbal)

My AGI was 52K last year (plus 9K in pretax retirement contributions that the fafsa adds back), he didn't get a pell grant, but did get 2400 Perkins and 3500 subsidized stafford, my EFC was about 12K for this year.

Even with 30K in scholarship money, NYU is costing me a pretty penny. W/O that scholarship, there is no way he would be at NYU

Do you need to send in a finaid app to be considered for merit scholarships?

Would it be possible for NYU to offer a full ride?

NYU Office of Financial Aid

I don't know if/how many 'full-rides' are offered by NYU. Especially if you want the room and board and books throw in. That is pushing 50K (depending on what school you are in and what dorm you are in).

I would like to hear from anyone who has received that. I don't think it happens too often (feel free to prove me wrong). NYU is need blind when it comes to admission, but they don't guarantee to meet 100% of need.

I actually heard of someone who was offered a full ride to NYU - but he's a junior in high school and owns his own business and he's worth about 100K. Hope that helps answer your question.

haha and hes probably the last person that needs it! but good for him. i personally am willing to go into debt for NYU.. if they would kindly let me in.

Damn, I on;y got 5100 from cas... That's what i get for being an only child

Igot no money aid from the financial aid. OMG, why!!

did you fill out the nyu financial aid application with your ed app? omg i did mine through the common app and that financial aid app isn't on there, and i didn't do it until four weeks later. and they still took it, thank god.

wait wait wait...if i got a "stern scholarship" does that mean i'm a "stern scholar"? but that wasn't mentioned anywhere in the letters.

no the stern scholarship is basically merit based aid, while stern scholars is the honors program for Stern, which according to the NYU forums, they are considering getting rid of.

Does anyone know if the CAS and J. Eckhouse Scholarships are need based or merit based?

Also, if I do get scholarships from outside sources, will NYU take away some of the money they gave me in scholarships?
