Merrill, Goldman, Big Banks

Has anyone been through the summer analyst interview process at Merrill or Goldman (specifically) or any of the other big banks? Do they ask you to submit your transcripts? I have attended more than one school and I put on my application my cumulative GPA which is different (higher than) my degree granting GPA. Will this matter? Will they look at this as trying to conceal something? Thanks

If you put a GPA that combines the GPAs that you received at two different schools then you must specify that the GPA on your resume is the average of both of your GPAs.

Another option is to list separately the GPA you received at your last school and the GPA you have at your current school.

Final option is to list only the GPA you have at your current school.

It MUST be clear what your GPA is comprised of. If you list a GPA that combines GPAs from two different schools and try to pass it off as the GPA from your current school (i.e. don't mention the fact that you attended another school and that those grades have been included in your posted GPA) then you are deceiving the potential employer.

Note: I have actually inquired about this with individuals who work in employment services at two different schools and with some prospective employers and this is what they all say.

If you are using your total GPA, just put 'Cumulative GPA: 3.xx' on your resume wherever you would list GPA normally. If you only want to list your GPA from the current school, just put 'GPA: 3.xx' instead. I doubt it would ever come up in the interview, but if it does just explain honestly and be prepared to give the other GPA on the spot.

bubba23, if you you listed all of the schools that you have attended and followed them with a "Cumulative GPA: 3.XX" then you will be fine (although I would use the word "Combined" because it's more intuitive to me, but that's a little nit-picky)

If you wrote down a "Cumulative GPA: 3.XX" without listing all of the schools that you have attended then you are being deceptive, no bones about it.

dont waste space with all the nonsense about what GPA you got from where....ur resume should have enough space for your work experience and activities...all firms do is to check if ur gpa is above 3.6 or 3.7....thats all...trust me....my dad's an MD at goldman.

So you want to transfer out of your current school because it has crappy recruiting and your worried about what kind of business/finance job you are getting out of college... But your dad is an MD at goldman... OK /rolls eyes

my dads firm doesn't recruit at UF...which is why i got an internship with Goldman based entirely on connections......and I would much rather get one based on my personal achievements......which is why i want to transfer.....

prathiba, are you a sophomore, if so did you get your internship in the Investment banking department or somewhere else?

Also I would like to know just how much influence an MD would have when it comes down to who gets offers and interviews. Obviously because this MD was your dad it would be a bit different. But what if you have an MD for a relative, or a senior associate for a close family friend...which is the case for me.

How much influence do they guys have when it comes to landing that interview and putting in a good word so that you ultimately receive an offer.

For example, when you interviewed with Goldman was the interview pretty relaxed since your dad basically assured you of the position already or were you still very much on your own after he got you the interview, or was there no interview at all.

thanks alot

look..i'll tell you what exactly happened....my father is really good friends with the recruiters and i had already met several of my interviewers before...but trust me referrals play a big deal in recruitments...I'll tell you what happens in GS for instance...they have referrals...and they put all those resumes in a book....and investment bankers then look at the book and pick out 20 resumes and call them in for interviews...and MD play a major role in hiring people by the way because the few people that are probably more powerful than MDs in these corporations are senior vice presidents..so if they can put in a good word for you then its sorted....
