I, too would like to know this… thank you cheyenne for posting this, but to add to it, does the price of dorms stay the same or does it differ depending on size, how many ppl are living with you (sing/double/triple), etc?

1) Are they in a suite formation? How many people to a suite and how many ppl to a bathroom?
The older phases (Phase I & II) are in suite formation. In each suite there are about 8-9 people and each bathroom has two shower stalls and two toilets.

2) Which are the best halls to live in? Which are the newest/cleanest/most social etc?
The newest dorms (Phase III & IV) have more residents because they are largest. I think all dorms in MC are very clean and spacious. And socially, it depends on the people. Halls are separated by interest, ranging from academic excellence to interest in music to general. There may be parties too.

3) What are my chances of getting a single? And is it a good idea to do so?
I think getting a single is not a problem since most people opt for doubles and triples because it is less expensive. And if you want more privacy, then go for a single. I think it’s easier to form closer relationships with roommates since they’re living with you 24/7.

Oh and it’s cheaper to live in a triple and it increases with the less occupancy.

And question: Which ones are phases 3 and 4? are they the units? or can someone give me a specific example of good halls like for example: Unit IV Hillside-Lluvia

“Which ones are phases 3 and 4? are they the units? or can someone give me a specific example of good halls like for example: Unit IV Hillside-Lluvia”

Well, a “good” hall mostly depends on the people you live with, but if you’re just talking in terms of how nice the place looks, definitely go for the halls in phase/unit 3 or 4. The rooms are larger and newer in general. Also consider that the newer your hall, the farther away you are from everything else. I don’t mind it too much because I’m a Humanities major and all my classes are on this side of campus, but when you have a class in the Engineering Hall or Rowland Hall at 8 in the morning, living in a phase 4 Mesa dorm is kind of a pain in the ass.

Lastly, if you want to ensure you get a phase 3 or 4 dorm, remember this: you can’t choose your hall specifically, you can only choose your “theme,” but by picking themes mostly in phase 3 or 4, you raise your chances of getting one of those halls. Make sure your potential roommate does the same if possible. Like for me, my top choices were 1. General Interest, 2. Diversity: Advocacy and Activism Hall, and 3. Interest in the Performing Arts Hall (just because I like dance), and so were my roommate’s, so we wound up with Niebla.

I lived at Mesa Court’s Vista Hall (one of the two leadership hall) during my first year at UCI!

It’s definitely not one of the newer ones, but it’s still really nice and clean!! As a leadership hall, My RA often offered small sessions that are leadership-related and they’re pretty helpful.

Vista is a coed hall–gentlemen’s suite on one side and the ladies’ on the other. For my particular suite, there were only 9 girls and we all shared two shower rooms and two bathrooms. I know on other floors, there were around 12 or more people per suite.

In my opinion, my hall was pretty social. People go out to the living room and play video games and pool together. And a lot of times we all study together in our study room.

I don’t think it’s hard for you to get a single. The advantage in getting a single is that you have the whole room to yourself! You can invite whoever and whenever you want. However, in my opinion, you really miss out one of the college experience of having a roommate. If you’re lucky and get an awesome roommate, you two will share so many wonderful time together :).

Let me know if you still got other questions! And welcome to UCI! zot zot!

^ If you’re lucky you might be able to get UCI’s wireless from time to time. But they are not designed for the dorms and are really, really unreliable. If you want wireless it’s best to get your own router or just stick to good ol’ ethernet cord :p
