Miami Ohio versus Saint Joseph's

That USNWR is clueless

Certainly the ranking methodology can be argued, and specific ranking can be bunk but it determines peers. The tiers and schools ranked within 10-15 spots are pretty much peers and they do a good job with this grouping.

If USNEWS is incorrect please show me a ranking you feel is more appropriate.

I don’t think anyone has made a worthwhile ranking, but we’re definitely better than 154th or wherever they have us.

You are way below 145. I guess the diontechristmas i know everything ranking will be coming out soon with the defintive list.

As I said determining if Yale is better than Princeton or Pitt is better than Syracuse is rather impossible and pointless. But groupings and general tiers do exist.

If I made one, what would make it any less reputable than from a company trying to sell mags?

I’m well aware, but that doesn’t mean they’re set in stone or correct.

Dear OP,

This thread seems to have gotten way off topic. I can understand your difficulty in deciding between Miami and St. Joseph’s. Both are excellent schools and you would probably be happy at either one. Miami has a beautiful campus, a lively social scene that is very Greek oriented. Everyone insists that you do not have to be Greek to have a great social life, but it seems to help. It is not a commuter campus, but kids do go to Cincinnati and Dayton sometimes on the weekends for entertainment. Miami has a loyal following and is considered a “public ivy”. It is a popular choice for bright Ohio kids who are looking for a bargain. Miami has a campus in Europe and it is is easy to study abroad. It is D1 in sports but takes a back seat to Ohio State in football (however, Ben Rothlisberger was a QB at Miami) and basketball. Hockey is the most popular sport.
Miami would be a great choice for many students.

St. Joseph’s is about half the size of Miami which might be a plus. I do not know much about SJU, but the Jesuit schools have much to offer in general. They are serious about the mission of forming “men and women for others”. If you want a religious atmosphere with like minded classmates and are interested in service, a Jesuit education would be ideal. I personally like schools that are near or in a city because there are many off campus events that are easy to take advantage of.

I hope some of these observations are helpful. Good luck on your decision!

Diontechristmas-- lets try this.

Please provide a list of schools that you would consider peers of Temple University. Acadmics would of course be the main factor in this grouping but I would also suggest to consider factors such as school culture, general campus vibe & student experience, and attitude and background of students. In other words schools that are typically on the radar screen along with Temple for a potential applicant. I am not going to criticize, just wondering your opinion.

For example I will do the same for Lafayette. I believe Lafayette’s closest peer schools are Bucknell, Colgate, Lehigh, Gettysburg, and Franklin & Marshall. Many of the same students apply to Lafayette as well as the other schools. Lehigh is not an LAC so the academic offerings are a bit different, but culture and overall type of student that attends are very similar. Schools like Dickinson and Holy Cross are similar to Lafayette from an academic standpoint, but I believe a different type of kid is usually attracted to those schools so they are not quite as similar as the others IMO.

I am interested in what you have to say.

HeartArt, thanks so much for your help, I decided on St. Joe’s yesterday.

Although Miami has everything to offer socially, and academically for a large school, I feel as if the academic system at a smaller school is quite simply a better fit for me.

Thanks for all the assistance.

TexasBoy, Congratulations on your decision! I think you will like SJU and there are certainly many benefits to a smaller school. Best wishes on your future.

My son is headed off to another Jesuit school this fall, Saint Louis University.

I’m glad you can afford it, because you just threw a lot of money in the trash.

Everything is relative, my friend.
