<p>i live in ohio and applied to this university. i want to major in business and i keep hearing that this school has one of the best business programs in the country and that it's very well recognized. well... i was looking through US News and World Reports and it's not even in the top 50 best business programs! i'm confused, is their business program not as good as everyone says? is this university overrated?</p>

<p>Go! haha, my sister goes there and my mom went there too. Yesterday I had to convince my entire class of 50 to go there for my oral presentation of Miami. People still shocked that it's not in Florida. To answer your question it's business programs are nationally recognized, but for more information you should look at review.com or miami's website muohio.edu</p>
<p>Im from missouri and took a tour of it last year. I really loved the campus, school size, and the academics. Only thing keeps me from wanting to go there is the business dept. I myself just like you that I want to major in business. The business dept. there is that it's not ranked all to great. Now you or others might be thinking that rank doesn't matter, but I seem to prove that wrong. Rank does play a role. If you go to bussiness week's site, and look at MBA (sorry undergrad doesnt work for this) and compare salaries you will notice that the higher the rank the higher pay. EXP: Take a decent public Indiana University. It's a good University nothing special but has a #18 ranked business program. The average pay is $76,000. Now lets take Miami University(OH). Good overall school, but not highly ranked business program. Average pay is $50,000. Yes, I know people say oh you dont need to go to a top business program to be sucessful, but I would still reccomend looking at rank to. I mean those two schools have a 50% difference in pay, which is quite a bit. So look at Miami if you like and if you really want to go there, then go. But just giving you the heads up to look at other schools to. Hope this helps.</p>

<p>My wife went to Miami as an undergrad. She later went on to get her MBA from the University of Michigan. </p>
<p>I can tell you that she thought -- hands down -- that the undergraduate students in the University of Michigan Business were much, much more impressive than the business students she encountered at Miami. She took a fair number of business classes at Miami, though she did not major in business. As an MBA student at Michigan, there are a fair number of extra-curricular activities where MBA students work with undergrads. She always raved about the quality of the undergrads at Michigan. </p>
<p>After finishing her MBA at Michigan, she then went to work at Kraft Foods as an assistant brand manager. At that time, Kraft hired several undergrads as associate brand managers (they normally just hire MBAs for marketing positions). Again, she was very impressed with the quality of the work and the professionalism of the undergrads from the University of Michigan Business School. Before she went back to business school, she worked with a fair number of undergrad business graduates from the University of Wisconsin as well. I can tell you that she would rank, from most impressive to least impressive:</p>

<p>I cannot really speak as to how Miami students compare to other the students from any other colleges or universities.</p>
<p>This is not meant to bash Miami or their undergraduate business program. I am sure that there are many fine students studying business at Miami. However, within the work context, she felt that Michigan uniformly pumped out business undergrads who were prepared, professional, hard working, and intelligent.</p>
<p>That might have a lot to do with it. You apply after two years of undergrad and need a high gpa and ec's to get in. Few undergrad schools are so selective. Quality in=quality out IMHO.</p>
<p>Yes, but there is also many other top publics that have amazing business schools that a B average high school student can get into. Where if you notice Miami's average GPA is a 3.7 so I'd say their not to dumb. The top B-school program's tend to have better professors and a better cirriculum, thus giving them a better B-rank. Im sure that at the undergrad level that their is quite a bit of a differnce in pay. I'd say $30,000 for Miami and $45,000 for a school like Purdue. I honestly really like Miami, but when it comes to business, it's just not their strength.</p>
<p>You are correct lovejoy; UM is very selective with their undergraduate business school. Though it has been a couple of years, if I recall correctly only about 30% of University of Michigan undergraduate students who apply to the business school are granted admission. Because of this rigorous screening process the undergrads at Michigan tend to be almost uniformly impressive.</p>
<p>Regarding Miami, my wife believes that she received an excellent education there. She was in the Western College Program at Miami but took quite a few business classes. In her MBA class, there were a couple of other students from Miami as well. So, an undergraduate degree from Miami University seems not to be a hinderance in being accepted to top MBA programs.</p>
<p>If you are interested at all in the Marketing side of Business...make sure you investigate the Laws Hall & Associates program at Miami. It's highly regarded and a great training program for Marketing students. </p>
<p>I'm a Miami alum....from more than a few years back....in the Broadcast Journalism program. I got an excellent education at Miami. Met any number of wonderful people who have gone on to be attorneys (one works under the US Atty General in D.C.), teachers (one is tenured at Princeton), award-winning journalists...the list goes on. </p>
<p>It's a great school...for a great price.</p>

It's been awhile since I was there so the program may have changed quite a bit...do you want Journalism (which was in the English school when I attended) or Broadcast Journalism (which is a Mass Communication degree....Communications dept)? I was the latter.</p>
<p>I looked pretty hard on the Miami site but could not find any average salary data for the undergrad business school. This is usually a decent indicator of quality when measured with schools in the same general area.</p>
<p>I was just wondering about how well you thought the program for you was in general. In my opinion, a good program can go bad quickly, but not vice versa.</p>
<p>Can't speak of the business program itself, but my English Teacher is one of the smartest men I've met in my life, and he went there for undergrad. He says good things of it.</p>
