Miami University (Ohio) Tuition Increase for 2018-2019?

My DS was accepted to Miami for Fall of 2018. We attended Make it Miami Day and received a brochure with prices, but they were out of date. Our Merit Award Letter estimates Tuition/Room & Board (without fees) to be $50K for 2018!! That is a 5.5% increase over 2017. My admissions rep says tuition will not be approved by Board til June. But we need to know now to help select a college. That is a huge increase. Anyone have insight?

Is that $50K for OOS?

@Mimi78 Most colleges raise tuition from 3-5% per year. At least with Miami you know you are locked in at that price for all four years.

My older son’s university hit us with a 6.6% tuition increase, but they do not have the tuition guarantee that MU offers. Trust me - that tuition guarantee is a big seller for Miami U!

Thx to all for answers. I just learned that part of the reason for the $50K is because DS is a Farmer School of Business Direct Admit. It is just an estimate, but each Business class adds a SURCHARGE of $110 per semester hour!! That is $330 for a 3-hour class. This is a $7-9K (depending on whether his minor or double major is in business or not) increase in the four year price and it was NOT disclosed during any of our visits. It was not even spelled our in our Financial Award Notice. IU’s Kelley charges a flat “Kelley surcharge” of $1200 per year. Their tuition increase is 2% from 2017 to 2018. IU just became less expensive than Miami for business majors.

@Mimi78 Wow, that makes me glad my son’s majoring in science. Really though, with a typical business student having a few business classes per semester that only $1,000 more or call it $2,000 per year. If that’s a deal breaker then you probably didn’t have your heart set on Miami in the first place. And remember the tuition promise will probably still make Miami less over time.

@EDHDAD Just because you do not have an issue when it comes to money, you can assume that others feel the same way. For many of us the extra cost is an issue. Whether we are looking at an extra $10,000 or a $1000… This is not the fist time you have made a comment about money… Not everyone has money like you do. A lot of these schools are not always very upfront about some of these “hidden” cost associated with the college degree. Please be respectful of others… College cost is already out of hand… and yes a $1000 can be the difference between attending one school versus the other.

@collegeisago I don’t mind spending a large portion of our family income on our kids college, we have saved a lot of money their entire lives in anticipation of them going to college, and will earn and/or borrow the rest. I don’t see my kids college as a burden or as being some else’s responsibility. I get it, these are all things that seem to rub some people the wrong way. Suffice to say though, having three kids in college at the same time is not going to be easy for us and I’m not making light of it. We are not rich, I’m just trying to maintain a positive attitude, not a victim attitude towards college. So many parents in here are stressed beyond belief and it’s has to be ruining the whole college thing for their kid(s). My point to @Mimi78 was just that in the “Big Picture” Miami is still a great value with the business school surcharges. I’m sorry if that offended you.

“I don’t mind spending a large portion of our family income on our kids college, we have saved a lot of money their entire lives in anticipation of them going to college, and will earn and/or borrow the rest.”

You dont mind, but others might not have anything extra or nothing at all. Asking Miami or any other school to increase a scholarship or in the case of this poster finding out about the extra fees associated with the Business school might be enough to force them to go to another school. I do not disagree that maybe paying extra for something might be the better option (generalizing what the option might be) but College cost are a huge burden for many. We should all be as fortunate as you.

I was awarded a very generous scholarship at Miami. I am very thankful for it. But when compared to my other options is really not enough. Money is huge factor in my decision. I do not want loans and I do not want to be a burden to anybody. It is hard enough as it is. Please do not assume.

@collegeisago The good or bad thing(depending on how you choose to look at it) is that the “the system” makes paying for college fair through the “Expected Family Contribution” system. So people who are low income pay very little, and as your parent’s income rises you are expected to pay more and more of the cost. It takes a big bite out of most everybody’s budget except the rich. So if the college is expecting your family to contribute a lot, I have news for you… it’s only because they have the means to do so. For families that have not saved, have large family lifestyle expenses relative to their income, and do not wish to borrow, that becomes a problem. For the “truly needy” it’s not really a problem because they are only required to take out relatively small low interest loans. I’m not saying any of this is comes easy by any means. But it is all very doable and requires sacrifice. Either your parent’s sacrifice or you sacrifice but with the way the system is set up it sucks for most people. Yeah my wife and I make enough money we get to pay full freight(minus the merit scholarship). Should you be jealous of us, or should we be jealous of the people who get tons of need based help? I don’t think so. Again the system is set up to be painful for most families. My advice to you, and I mean this in the best way so please don’t get offended, is that if $1,000 is really that big of a deal to you and your family and it makes all the difference between having to borrow or not, then do your first two years at junior college. You can work a ton while you are there and save bunch of money for when you transfer. You’ll be happy you did.

I just looked at my Ds merit letter and I don’t see anything regarding the cost of attendance, only her merit award amount.

This page details all charges however not for those entering fall 2018/2019. How did you find out what the increase will be?

@EDHDAD Wow you are missing the whole point. Do you know that the majority of the middle class or high middle class fall in what its called the Donut Hole. They just dont qualify for need based loans. The way you think is what concerns me about Miami. Is there enough diversity?

@collegeisago Uhmmm…I’m from CA, the diversity capital of the western United States so please don’t play that game. That’s what people do when they don’t have a solid argument, labeling and name calling. It’s so overdone these days. Anyways, it sounds like we are both in “the donut whole”(yes I know what that is). I’m willing to bet our family incomes are somewhat similar. We just have very different expectations of what to do about the high cost of college. Do you want to know why college costs so much? Look on google about the legislation that Clinton passed in 1998 that took away the ability for student loan debt to be discharged away in bankruptcy. As soon as that legislation was signed into law by Clinton, banks were willing to loan virtually unlimited amounts of money to students and their parents, and as a result colleges were able to start charging whatever they wanted. Plus, our country is obsessed with college rankings, and colleges rise in the rankings by spending lots of money on teachers salaries and buildings and by just being expensive to attend(google that too if you don’t believe me). Students would never be able to borrow the money to pay the high tuitions to fund all of that spending if it were not for that 1998 legislation. So you can be mad at me all you want, but I’m not the reason college is so expensive.

haha did you just assume @EDHDAD 's race and/or cultural background?! @collegeisago by implying that his comments (none of which say he is white) make you question whether there is enough diversity at Miami, you not only imply you know his race and background, but also that he should be ashamed of it because you say his supposed race and background (that at least part of it you have assumed or fabricated in your head) is making you question whether you want to go to Miami University. Such blatant race shaming and culture shaming should not be tolerated on a forum on the financials of a university!

@ProllyBrokeSoon First of all I was not assuming anything about race or cultural background towards anybody. My frustration with @EDHDAD has more to do with his constant comments about affordability, income ,and the perhaps how to go about paying for it. There is NOTHING about RACE in any of my comments. So lets not even go there.

“Such blatant race shaming and culture shaming should not be tolerated on a forum on the financials of a university!”

Perhaps I should have been clear (and careful) with my Diversity comment. Diversity can take many meanings. Many reviews have mentioned that Miami tends to attract a very “upper class” student body and many posters here as well as other forums have asked about Diversity at the school. I myself do not have any issues with the school. I have been there numerous times and I find it to be an excellent institution and a place where I would be proud to attend. Again my issue is more we the assumptions. At any rate, sorry if I offended you or anybody. I have said enough.

@ProllyBrokeSoon When people convince themselves that others view life differently as a result of luck and circumstances beyond their control then you will rarely talk them out of it.

@Mimi78 my daughter was also a direct admit into Farmer. We also did recently attend the “Make it Miami” day. They did in fact bring up the additional fee and discussed. To be honest, that’s one of the many things I do like about this university, is there transparency. So far, my daughter has been accepted to an additional 8 universities. And it seems like you have to dig and dig to research fees and other charges. The tuition freeze (for us at least) is also a big deal. I really don’t like uncertainties or “approximates”. The tuition freeze allows us to budget for the next four years. Some other schools not so much. @MommyCoqui from my understanding the fee for Farmer will be $110 per credit hour next year. I would call the Onestop number and ask them directly. Every time I call this school (its been several to several departments) they always answer my questions in the same call. I have not had the same luck from other schools. (To me, its a red flag when you call a school and cannot get a straight answer and they are still in the “recruiting” stage.) Regardless of what you read online (including my own comments and advice), I would still call and confirm.

@college.dad.2B Just wondering is the $110 per hour fee is it just for Business courses or all the courses being taken? For example in the first year, the student might take 30 credits (15 per semester) in which only 12 of those credits are business related.

@Setter4life All classes in the business department only. Realistically only 3 out of 5 in an average semester so $990.

Thank you. Some schools have a flat fee. I think both of my other options such a Minnesota Carlson and OSU Fisher have a flat semester fee whether you are taking one class or five classes.
