Miami vs. Ohio University vs. Kenyon College

I'm going to CC this year and I'm transfering out in time for fall admission for next year. I'm thinking of majoring in Chemistry and English or just Chemistry with a minor in English. I'm in-state and when I was in HS, my ACT was a 23 (I took it once, didn't study and I admittedly have a harder time staying focused) and a 3.2 GPA (I had a bad case of senioritis freshman year and was a total ass. Be nice, I was only 13 at the time, I've sense wised up quite a bit and my last two years of high school, my GPA was never lower than a 3.8), if that makes any difference. But like I said, I plan on kicking major ass at community college in October, the spring and the summer.

Which is better, IYO?

The obvious answer is Kenyon.

However, it really depends on your interests. Miami is better for business and offers engineering that is on par with Ohio, and OU has stellar journalism. Miami offers architecture, both offer art, and Kenyon should be your only consideration for any other path of interest if you have the stats.

I agree that Kenyon is the obvious answer. Unfortunately, it is a very difficult school to get admitted to and the admissions criteria is very high. Most admitted students have SAT’s in the mid 600’s and above and have taken on average approximately 5 AP courses in high school. I have not checked on their stats for transfer students but I can’t imagine it is much easier. It is also a private college, unlike Miami and Ohio U, so the tuition is significantly higher.

My son went to Miami and loved it and D is looking at it. I don’t know much about Ohio U, sorry.

I’m surprised that no one has pointed out that Kenyon is about 1/9th of the size of Miami; you’re trying to compare entirely different schools. Kenyon has higher admissions standards (middle 50% scored between a 28-32 on the ACT) than Miami, but it has a much different atmosphere.

D. loves Miami, had several Chem. classes as pre-med knows a lot of Chem. Engineering and Chemistry majors at Miami. Everybody who she knows is very happy with school. However, she is in Honors and had HS GPA=4.0uw and ACT=33. So her experience might be different. Honors requirements at Miami are very high.
