Michigan Competitive Scholarship?

So, the Michigan Competitive Scholarship just appeared in my FA package for THIS year. I am a second-year student. I got it last year and when it didn't appear this year, I assumed that it was simply because it wasn't funded.

Then, over the weekend, $300 for each semester randomly popped up in my FA package from the MCS. We didn't receive an email or anything saying that it was coming back. I googled it and didn't come up with anything.

Does anyone know if it just recently got funding? Or did they screw up my FA package originally? I am most definitely eligible for it.

The reason I'm asking is because this isn't the first time there's been a snag in my state funding. My last name has an apostrophe and it almost kept me from getting the Michigan broken-Promise Scholarship last year, and I would never have found out unless I called the state numerous times and asked why it wasn't showing up in my FA package. If the MCS just got funding or something like that, then I'm not going to worry about the snag. However, if this is abnormal then I will find out what happened.

Thanks all :).

It’s correct. The rosters JUST came to colleges from the state last week. Colleges never know whether or not the money will really come until it actually does, and they don’t know who will get it until the state sends the lists. Your school put the money on quickly!

There was no MI Promise last year, by the way. The state said they’d award it but never actually did. Your school was kind enough to replace what you WOULD have received with their own money.

Yay for my school :).

No, no I am very grateful for my school for funding the MPS. I even sent them a thank you email. (Yes, I know I’m a dork…). I am mad at the state, definitely NOT mad at my school.

What happened with the MPS was not because of the whole funding issue. I had called my U and they said they never received notification that I earned the award. Many phone calls to the state of Michigan financial aid center (whatever its name is), we discovered that it was because my names didn’t match up. Some computers like apostrophes, some don’t. It’s frustrating >.< It’s just good to know that this happened to everyone… not just those of us with characters in their name :).

You are right in that if you hadn’t fixed the name at the state level, you wouldn’t have been on the list for the MP that never came through … so you wouldn’t have gotten the school’s grant in its place. It’s a really good thing that you stay on top of your aid.

I have to look at my son’s account … hopefully, the MCS is on it now. I don’t know how quick his school is with posting MCS.
