Michigan cracks the USNWR top 25 for the first time in more than a decade

Please don’t make it sound like Michigan is some small LAC with 25 people in each class. Their EECS 183 class approaches 1000 people, among other classes. All the good large public schools (and most big private schools also) are going to have large classes, so don’t kid yourself that you’re getting “a better education” because of “smaller class sizes”. I’m sure Michigan is a good school, but don’t mislead.

The 2,000 people in the CS61A class at Berkeley has been this way for years. A very small percentage actually goes to the class because of technology, it’s a webcasted class.

@ProfessorPlum168 Cal is a great education. I could have chosen my words more carefully.

Class sizes were a factor in our decision. So, the bottom line is that both Cal and UCLA have a 19:1 student-teacher ratio and UMich has 15:1. In evaluating schools a couple years ago, we asked about UMich class sizes with several current UMich students and faculty and they said on the whole class sizes were not large in most cases. We also visited several classrooms when we went back to visit. And even the large classes weren’t anywhere near 1,000.

A relative of mine graduated Cal recently, and played a D1 sport, so we had spoken to a lot of people about Cal over several years.

The feel of the campus in AA is small to me, when compared to Cal and UCLA too.

I’m late to the party but I can also back up the other posters here about OOS tuition at UM. Michigan is very generous if you are from a modest income. My daughter got a substantial grant and a very rare merit scholarship from Michigan. With what Michigan gave us and one other private scholarship we basically pay room and board for my daughter to attend. I realize we are lucky but the attitude that UM is too expensive and not achievable for OOS students is not true. UM tries hard to take care of those who need the help. The problem is there are a lot of wealthy students at UM from OOS and it seems those parents are the most vocal on here and other websites and keep telling people UM gives nothing. I am a member of a parent UM group on Facebook and was called a liar because they have never heard anyone getting a grant from UM who is OOS. UM has the largest student body from the top 1% in a public university- the average family salary I believe is over $630,000 a year for that group. My daughter has a lot of stories from the rich kids going to their resort homes over break on their private jets and wearing $1000 Canadian Goose jackets. Affording UM if you are outside is attainable in some circumstances and the “they never give anything” is just flat out false. BTW- we are from Ohio and other than football there just isn’t a comparison with Ohio State. People at Michigan can give 2 beans about OSU unless it’s the week they are playing them but for some reason Ohio State is just obsessed with UM.

“the average family salary I believe is over $630,000 a year for that group. My daughter has a lot of stories from the rich kids going to their resort homes over break on their private jets and wearing $1000 Canadian Goose jackets”

That is how many people have described a lot of the Michigan Stereotype

.“People at Michigan can give 2 beans about OSU unless it’s the week they are playing them but for some reason Ohio State is just obsessed with UM.”

We are not obsessed with Michigan. It has more to do with the fact that a lot of those Michigan kids are not very humble. They only get humbled when they play OSU.

A lot of people do not know that both business schools are named after relatives from the same family. Indeed a small connection between these two schools. Michigan is higher rated and more difficult to get in. Much more selective for sure. Indeed a very prestigious University and deserving of its ranking. But not an Ivy League. and that what rubs people the wrong way. On the other hand, OSU is not as prestigious and not as selective. However, many of their specialties are not far behind Michigan and difficult to get in. Michigan belongs in the first tier of Public Universities and OSU and many others mentioned above would probably belong in the second tier of Public Universities.

By the way, for the poster above that mentioned that UF is not even close. Really? It is a currently ranked number 7 just a few spots behind Michigan. The reaction of the poster is what is wrong with the overall Superiority attitude that rubs some people the wrong way. Again, Michigan is NOT an IVY. Neither is UF, OSU…Is it worth the OOS tag? Perhaps. It is a personal choice.

It’s anecdotal, but I’m not running into those stereotypes. My kid is a sophomore now and I have made several trips back there from CA. Moves in, moves out, parents weekend, etc. I fly economy and we don’t buy our winter coats from Canada Goose. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of the brand name until it was mentioned on this site. Of course, we live in CA, so winter jackets aren’t really needed.

Football? Absolutely. UMich was spanked 62-39 last year.

Basketball? Nope. Baseball? Nope. Hockey? Nope. Soccer? Nope. Rowing? Nope.

Coming to this board to make a stereotypical comment sounds pretty obsessed to me…

Who ever stated that Michigan was an Ivy? There are quite a few exceptional and elite schools that aren’t a part of the Ivy League Conference. The PA score of U-M at USNWR (currently 4.5/5.0) show that the school is right up there with other colleges ranked between 5-15. All of those schools are “elite” academically. Florida, and to a greater extent tOSU, are not close to these lofty rankings. It is what it is…

The rankings are the rankings and I will leave it to the experts. I will mostly agree with many NCLUDING THE FACT that Michigan is the more prestigious University and one of the better Public schools as well as schools in the whole world. It is the pretentious way I have personally encountered. Not just from the certain kids but from certain parents as well. One should feel EXTREMELY proud of being able to attend or afford such a distinguished institution, but there is a difference between proud and being pretentious. The University of Michigan has earned its place.

“Basketball? Nope. Baseball? Nope. Hockey? Nope. Soccer? Nope. Rowing? Nope.”

But deep inside of all us, Football is what matters. LOL!!! Bring the Thanksgiving ForK!!! Wait, the Fork would be the ASU Sun Devils. but let’s not bring them into this.

“But deep inside of all us, Football is what matters.”

Spoken like a true Buckeye.

“Michigan charges elite rates like the privates, and gets them, because it is an elite school.”

Tuition, room, board, fees OOS at UMich, UVA, UCLA or UCB is north of $60k. UNC OOS is the only relative bargain at about $51k.

OOS at the public Ivies competes with fancy privates and therefore (surprise!) is priced at that level.

Tell me that when it’s March Madness!

I actually watched every UMich CWS game thru the championship loss to Vandy. :disappointed:

Tell that to my kid who’s cooking up chicken, broccoli and rice from Trader Joes for dinner. Three nights in a row.

No such thing as a “public ivy”

Since we are talking rankings, Forbes:

University of Michigan #20

University of Florida #70

Ohio State University #121

Lastly, let’s not kid ourselves, there are many wealthy, full pay families (I know many in LA) that will pay outrageous OOS tuition for their kids to go to Michigan because they “want to get away” even though UCLA is right next door.

I am an Ohio native who lives in NE Ohio where they worship Ohio State (because the Cleveland pro teams have sucked so many years), grew up in Northeast Ohio which was 35 min from Ann Arbor and works for an agency who is headquartered in Columbus OH and I travel there frequently. There is just no comparison. Michigan has more resources, outranks OSU in almost everything academically, has more successful sports overall and the campus and environment for the students in Ann Arbor are just outstanding. UM also has more than double the endowment than OSU, hence they can offer more substantial scholarships and grants to their students. My daughter was flown to campus, put in a hotel and fed for 3 days when she was a senior in high school. She got to sign her scholarship like an athlete would- all for the Art and Design school. How may prestigious schools treat non athletes like that? I know Ohio State didn’t. I know if you have a C average, weigh 300 pounds and can run a 4.2 40 you may get treated at Ohio State that way.

@rjkofnovi

“Ya think? With few exceptions, who in their right minds would pay OOS costs to attend tOSU without “generous” incentives. Michigan charges elite rates like the privates , and gets them, because it is an elite school”

Isn’t that prestigious? That exactly the attitude. I bet you can’t wait for next year’s ranking to see if UM moves past Berkeley or Georgetown for that matter. You really make it sound like a great education can not be had at OSU or Florida or anywhere else. Based on your comments above, UCLA must be head and shoulders above UM since UM is heads and shoulders above UF. Correct?

I do not think anybody is questioning how good Michigan is. Many here would value the opportunity to get a great discount in order to get a great education at many “highly rated” schools.

"But deep inside of all us, Football is what matters. LOL!!! "

Common @rjkofnovi you are allow to laugh a little. That is funny. The folks up in Ann Arbor have been thinking about this for at least 8 years. The legend of Harbough lives!

@sushiritto She should feel proud and so should you. Lots to be proud!

@DBY2017 Very Nice and very classy…Congratulations. Lots to be proud as well. My experience has been the same at OSU

“You really make it sound like a great education can not be had at OSU or Florida or anywhere else. Based on your comments above, UCLA must be head and shoulders above UM since UM is heads and shoulders above UF. Correct?

No. UCLA, Cal, and Michigan are peers academically. Florida and tOSU are not. It’s that simple. This whole discussion involving Ohio State and ultimately Florida started back in Post #11. I never stated that either school was mediocre or graduates are not successful; they just are not at Michigan’s level academically. Very few schools are tbh.

“Lastly, let’s not kid ourselves, there are many wealthy, full pay families (I know many in LA) that will pay outrageous OOS tuition for their kids to go to Michigan because they “want to get away” even though UCLA is right next door.“

I’m sure that many kids in CA also are full pay at other top schools across the nation. California has so many people that they are probably one of the top feeder states to all the nations elite schools no matter where they are located.

Seems like every time Michigan is mentioned there is a debate. It’s a great school and I won’t laundry list the reasons why. When comparing to other schools academically, students had a GPA avg of 3.9 with a 32-35 Act.
Engineering was 3.9 with a 34 Act avg. So basically the same for both schools.

Call it whatever term you want but that’s a pretty good school population. ?

Setter4life, your presence on a Michigan forum is evidence to the contrary.

“Tell me that when it’s March Madness!”

While UMich may have finally passed dear old UVA in USNWR (sad), the Hoos are #1 on the hardwood (happy)!
