Michigan Econ or finance at villanova b-school.

Last time I checked UChicago had an acceptance rate around 35%. I don't suppose getting in Villanova is as hard as getting into Chicago.

I'm a big fan of Nova and live around 10 mins. from Nova (dont go there though). I wouldnt even consider going to Nova over UMich. It isnt close. Nova is a great school, but people are overrating their business school. I really dont think it's as good as these rankings show. UMich econ, easily (coming from a big Nova fan)

Actually, Chicago's acceptance rate is generally 40%.

Which further proves that often, acceptances rates don't mean anything when judging the quality of the student body. The fact that Villanova's acceptance rate is lower than Chicago doesn't mean that its harder to get into Villanova. Students that apply to Chicago also apply to Ivies, while students that apply to Villanova also apply to schools like Lehigh, Indiana, Penn State, Ohio State and UMD College Park.

The types of people who apply to Nova and Chicago are 120% completely different.

And using that logic, people who apply to Nova and UMichigan are 60% different. :)

A lot of people applying to Villanova have 1200 SATs and mediocre GPAs. It's just that now those people are being rejected whereas before they would have been accepted.

I was not trying to say that it was anywhere near as difficult to gain admission compared to a UChicago type school. I was just showing that with 'Nova's new rank there admission standards have increased.

michigan econ is a very good program, but villanova's business program will offer you more opportunities which are quite comparable to ross. michigan is a huge school and there are so many econ majors. plus, you will also be competing with ross and engineering students for jobs.

and as you already know, villanova has amazing placement and it's pretty comparable to ross. a lot of my friends go to nova and i've seen how amazing their career/academic services are.

and as for mba placement, i don't know why everyone here is saying that the michigan name will provide better opportunities to get into top mba programs. it's the work experience, gmat scores, gpa (somewhat) that count. and i'm pretty sure a 3.5 from michigan and a 3.5 from nova isn't going to be viewed much differently.

and alexandre, why don't you think villanova shouldn't be ranked anywhere in the top 10? do you even have any valid reasons for this claim?

I have 20 valid reasons:

Wharton
Ross
Sloan (MIT)
McIntire (UVa)
Haas (Cal)
Stern (NYU)
Tepper (Carnegie Mellon)
Cornell (AEM)
McCombs (UT-Austin)
Kenan Flagler (UNC)
McDonough (Georgetown)
Marshall (USC)
Mendoza (Notre Dame)
Goizueta (Emory)
Carroll (Boston College)
Kelley (Indiana)
Olin (WUSTL)
I am probably forgetting a couple others.

Add to those Northwestern's new program.

I don't think Villanova is bad. I am sure it is very solid, but not quite top 10 material.

the_aspriant, LSA Econ placement is almost as impressive as Ross', and both are more impressive than Villanova. Villanova graduates 500 students per class, of which only 100 or so land jobs in top companies. Ross graduates 350 per class, of which 200+ land jobs in top companies. There is no comparison.

all you did was list undergraduate business programs. how are you determining if one school is better than the other? prestige?

and what's a "top" company to you? and i don't know where you're getting your data from, but if you simply search finance majors, it's definitely filled with your "top" companies.

http://www.villanova.edu/studentlife/careers/placement/2006/datasearch.htm

also, how do you know that LSA econ placement is almost as impressive as ross'?

i'm pretty sure that the UM Career Center does not publish that information.

nobody's biased here at all...

haha i'm definitely not biased. i actually was a student at ross. with that being said, i still have my michigan pride.

i just think villanova is an under-rated business program that i would choose over mich econ. and it's not like what i'm saying is complete nonsense. i had a lot of friends who graduated this past april as econ majors, and i have a lot of friends who graduated and are currently at villanova. i'm also from NJ, so i know a lot about each school.

Oh the IRONY!

So I suppose by your logic Mich Econ students are dumber than Villanova Finance students and therefore don't get as many job offers. Yeah right. More than half of those Villanova kids wouldn't have gotten into LSA at Michigan. I would never ever chose Villanova over Mich LSA based on academics and many other non-academic aspects too, which I don't want to address here. Besides, an Econ degree from Michigan is much much better than a Finance degree from Villanova for getting into a top graduate MBA program. I'm sorry but I just won't go to a small school with inferior quality, expensive tuition, few world class faculty, much less resources and no prestige. And sorry, it's just not my fault if I don't want to go to a school that no one's heard of outside Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. I don't care if its an up and coming B-school or whatever - there are so many other B-schools that are "up and coming", and quite frankly I don't buy into that crap. IMO, you should always go to a better overall school and in this case its quite clear that school is Michigan.

My friend's mom is the president of the school and i'm not biased one bit...

mightynick, i know you're just trying to support umich econ cause you just transferred into it from penn state. haha. you probably would've done the opposite if you got ended up at villanova. it's okay though, cause you're just trying to make yourself feel better.

you haven't even been there yet and you didn't have the slightest idea of umich in general a few months ago. you just base all of your fact and insight into what people tell you here.

get over yourself and stop being so uptight.

I didn't even apply to Villanova - and if given the opportunity to apply there again I still wouldn't do it. I'd rather do PSU Finance over Villanova Finance, and I left PSU Finance for UM Econ. Villanova is an overrated school for rich white kids.
