Michigan, I want to join in

Hi, Guys:
I have been waitlisted from Michigan currently. I made a video becasue I really want to join in. Please click the link and support me. Thanks to all!

Michigan, I want to join in - YouTube

Good luck with getting off of the waitlist. However, in case you don’t, you should definitely consider going to WCC (or Schoolcraft? Did you say you’re in Novi? It was hard to hear.) and transferring. In the end you will end up with the same degree at a lower price.

Also, purely a curiosity, how do you have a picture of the first time you raised your hand in class?

Honestly, I cringed my entire way watching through that video.

And I was quite a bit unimpressed. I think if you had focused on a singular event you did(like an organized fundraiser with hundreds in attendance) that’d be better than generic things like good GPA, test scores, taking AP classes, etc. Also, you could have used better video production techniques.

Yes, I’m from Novi.
That picture is my ESL teacher takes it for me.

Vladenschlutte, Thanks for your supporting.

Is this a common thing now? A few kids got into good school’s as reaches because they made a video, or wrote a song, or whatever, and now more and more kids are trying that?

Yeah, this idea quickly lost its originality, which was the main hook involving creating videos or something similar as an appeal. Though it can still be effective, but only if the video is creative or well done, neither of which applies to this video unfortunately. It seems like most of this video is just statement of fact, things that were probably already included in your application. A better way to go about this would be to spend more time on it and create something that displays your creative or artistic side, as this is an aspect that is much overlooked or not seen at all in the application process.

Anyway, best of luck, though I wouldn’t get your hopes up. I’m not trying to be rude, just blunt.

Most years, Michigan does not accept any students from the wait list. And when it does, it is usually less than 1% of the students on the list, so the odds are not good at all. I did not look at your video, but that was done in the past, so the element of originality is no longer there. There really is very little you can do but hope for the unlikely event to happen.

Do a street performance or something. I don’t think I’ve seen that one before.

Thanks for your advice!

You do have a story to tell – You came to this country four years ago with sketchy English skills, yet you managed to complete high school with straight A’s and 8 AP/IB courses. However, the best way to tell your story is through your essays. I agree with the poster above that your video won’t do it. Your best bet is to ask your college counselor to come to bat for you. If he feels strongly about it, he should call the Michigan admissions counselor now and put in a plug for you.

Unfortunately, there are tons of major grammar and spelling mistakes throughout the video. I feel like this could be detrimental. Maybe that was an issue in your essays, too?

Considering where she started 4 years ago, it is remarkable the progress she’s made already. She took AP US History in 10th grade and aced it.

Someone with similar background did very well at Michigan and was chosen as the student speaker at the 2009 commencement (google for George Dong).

CollegiateDreams, I am really sorry about the grammars, but I had really a short time to make it with all the videos and photos.

GoBlue81, Thanks so much for your support!

LoveUmich, I would definitely look into what Vlad had said. You can easily transfer to Michigan from community colleges especially WCC, provided that you do well.
What’s your plan of action now, if Michigan still says no?

Square, if Michigan still says no, I will definitely transfer. I really want to ends up there. And Thanks for your support!
