Michigan or Wayne Medstart

Hi everyone, I've been accepted to both UofM Ann Arbor and the Wayne State University 8 year Medstart program, and now I have to decide between the two. I know that the Medstart program is prestigious and it is very tempting, but the fact that Wayne has little to no campus life really bothers me. I admit that I'm in love with UofM's campus, and downtown Detroit really pales in comparison. Yet a guarantee into Wayne's med school is very attractive, and I do plan on attending med school in the future. I know if I go to Mich, I'll most likely major in something in engineering, and that might make applying to med school difficult.
I've received enough scholarship money to go to either institution with little or no student debt, so money is not a factor in my decision. Any advice? Thanks for reading!

University of Michigan. People kill to go there. As a Michigan graduate you will have a shot at lots of top med schools.

Haha! Me too! I am so torn between Umich and WSU MedStart and I got accepted to both. I’m glad I found a kindred person! (:

Go for the sure thing kevinevin at Wayne if you know you want medicine. The price is the same and you will be relieved of a lot of stress later on. You can always visit your friends in A2 on the weekends. It’s not that far.

As far as prestige goes, in Michigan, both Wayne and U of M are respectable schools that can give you a great education. In America and the world, U of M is known and respected; Wayne is not as well-known.

As far as quality goes, however, I know people that go to both schools, and both the Wolverines and the Warriors are very pleased and content with their schools. I agree with you that U of M’s campus is AMAZING, but I can’t really speak for Wayne’s.

As another poster said, people kill to go to UMich, but also, do realize that their med school is even more competitive than undergrad. Having an undergraduate degree from U of M may help you if you wish to apply to somewhere other than Wayne, like say Oakland’s new med school or one out of state.

If you really want to go to med school, I’d really think about the automatic opportunity with Wayne. If you wish to practice in Michigan, a degree from any of the top 4 (and only?) med schools (UMich, State, Wayne, and Oakland) should be fine. Going OOS or wanting to work for a top hospital might require a bit of an upgrade, though.

I’m not med school bound, but this is just knowledge that I’ve picked up from my friends who are. Honestly, a lot of them are shooting for Wayne or Oakland because they’re good and less competitive nationally.

Whichever school you choose will be great for you, but the opportunities afterwards may differ a little.

Good luck to you, and congrats on your acceptances to these two awesome schools!
