Ok so I got the $20,000/year out of state engineering scholarship and one of the conditions on it was that I had to maintain a 3.0. Coming ou of high school top of my class using just my brains, I thought this wouldnt be that hard. well.. my work ethic was terrible. And I was punished rightfully for it ha. I got a 2.5 after first semester. I have tried really hard and I dont think I'll be able to pull it up to a 3.0 at the end of this semester. Really close though, like a 2.9. I thought originally they said you lose the scholly if you dont bring it up after a semester. But I never got a letter in the mail or anything about it (but when I was in the directors office, I remember seeing papers on her desk that were written to candidates whose gpa was < 3.0), so I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this scholarship and do you know if they give you more than one semester to pull up your GPA? do they just look at improvement maybe?

I doubt they would take the scholarship from you. They will probably just send you a letter or, worse case scenario, put you on probation until you bring that GPA up to 3.0.

I think CCRunner is right. Finishing your second semester strong will probably save your derriere. there are no guarantees of course, but Michigan is understanding. Probation would mean a warning. In other words, since your second semester GPA is likely to be well over 3.0, they will give you a chance for another semester. If you again manage to get well over 3.0, you are fine. Should you once again dip lower than 3.0, you can probably kiss your scholarship goodbye.

I was in your situation back in my day. Well, I did not have a scholraship since I was international, but I assumed that since I came in with much higher qualifications that my fellow classmates, I could take it easy and maintain a god GPA. I quickly realized that Michigan students’ lower stats in high school were a result of theirtakingit easy, not of their lackof ability. Michigan students are deceptively good! hehe!

Should Michigan try to take your scholraship away, definitely appeal it. While being sorry for your first semester debacle, you are clearly working to remidy that and you deserve another semester to prove yourself.

Well thats the thing. I will likely be able to bring up the overall GPA to a 2.9, but not a 3.0. They dont want a “3.0” semester average, they want a 3.0 cumulative haha. My second semester only average right now is about a 3.4ish?

As in if you re-read my original post, I just finished my freshman year with close to a 2.9ish in engineering. I thought they would send me the probation letter after first semester (when I finished with a 2.5), but they didn’t. That’s why I’m hoping they’ll give me one more semester. I thought at orientation when they said the average engineering GPA was a 2.8, I thought it was a joke. Guess not haha.

That’s why I said there are no guarantees, but a 3.4 on your second semester is still good. That is why you deserve another chance. If you can finish with a 3.4 GPA this semester and a 3.3+ GPA next semester, you should be good.

Yeah with a 2.9 cumulative at the end of this semester, I should easily be able to bring my GPA up past a 3.0 if I can just have one more semester.

Which is why you should appeal if Michigan tries to take your scholraship away. But as CCRunner suggests, I think Michigan will play the waiting game and see how you do next semester…so you better keep it up!

i feel for ya, i was the same way. I do well on standardized tests, and was virtually unchallenged in high school, I thought that would continue in college, but then got my butt whipped in michigan engineering in the first few terms. Don’t feel bad, a lot of people go through it. I had 2.5 for the first term, and not much higher for the next few, but I got close to perfect GPA the last several terms and did alright when all said and done.

Yeah I am just wondering why I never got the letter after first semester with a 2.5… cause I remember all those letters on the director’s table that go out to students with < 3.0. I’m guessing I will get it next since I have been under a 3.0 cumulative for 2 semesters in a row now.
