I got my time for picking out my housing at Michigan State and I was disappointed as the only dorms available were in East and I wanted South. I have the earlier picking date as my roommate can’t pick until next week. What are the chances that more dorms in other neighborhoods will open (I really wanted South)? Can anyone tell me the reputation of the various dorms in east? Also, if I take a room now can I make a change before the May 26 deadline if a better dorm opens up?
There is a Michigan state forum, BTW. I’m just going to copy and paste what I said previously:
I was in the same boat. I called and they told me that sometimes dorms would open up for singles( going in blind) before the deadline. The girl on the phone said that I could wait it out and I did. Best case scenario: I get into the neighborhood I wanted
Worst case: I still get stuck with akers.
I just waited it out and by the time I checked yesterday at around 9 there were two openings in Brody and I took one. So, just tell your daughter to keep refreshing if she has her heart set on one neighborhood!
Also, dorms are pretty much final from what I hear, at least until the semester starts and people switch rooms/ roommates.
Edit:
Oh, my bad. You must be the daughter the other post talked about. There were two posts with the same title so I just assumed they were the same.
I got mixed reviews from various people. Some people dislike it because of the “diversity” (transfers, internationals and AAs) so they called it “the ghetto”. (I don’t agree with it, BTW). Others like it because of the bus stops. Some say it has a large freshmen population because it is the largest dorm and freshmen pick las . Others say the food is bad, some say it’s okay. Some say it is far from campus and social events but others say it is closer to cedar which is where the parties happen.
As you see, there is a lot of hersay. A lot of things might have been true five years ago, but not now. Thats why you have to be objective in reading reviews about dorms. But if you truly like state and you are the least bit social, then dorm location can be overcome.
Oh, and I also heard west akers was better than Hubbard. Take of that what you will
The housing selection process at MSU is RIDICULOUS. I wanted Holden. At all of the tours I went on they said that whoever committed first got to pick first, so I committed in October. I got kind of a late date to pick but I was like whatever, not a big deal.
Then it comes my time to pick and NOTHING is open, except like Akers and Hubbard of course.
I called, she said that South probably has limited room left bc of the returning students, residential college, and engineering pourover. So I sat and refreshed for hours and hours.
Holden FINALLY pops up. I click on it, that room has been taken. I refresh, finally get a room. I put all of our info in, and it gives me an error message at the end. I ended up calling, she looked at my account and said that “someone just probably clicked it right before me”. I was soooo upset, it was first floor, too.
I just ended up picking Holmes today. I’m not too hurt about it, it’s not bad apparently.
