Interesting! It didn’t occur to me there would be an additional set of log ins and passwords to remember for each school! S24 has a spreadsheet going already to keep track of it all.
D24 hasn’t set up the Net ID either.
It may not be necessary. He just finished setting it up and there is nothing in there except mass emails for current students. I would hold off so you don’t have all those accounts to juggle. I was just so curious and he is waiting to hear back about an MSU pre-college scholarship this Friday and just in case they sent the announcement there, I wanted him to have it set up. But now Im thinking it was probably unnecessary-lol.
Mine was admitted 10/18, presidential (15k annually) scholarship plus study abroad. No word yet from Honors College. Any chance at this point for him?
Kid was admitted 10/18, presidential (15k annually) scholarship plus study abroad. No word yet from Honors College. Any chance at this point or is it getting too late?
I definitely don’t think it’s too late. I believe they say that the invites go out 6-8 weeks after admission. Give it another week or two and if you haven’t heard anything, have them write the essay via the Honors college site requesting entry.
For anyone whose older children have experienced the Honors program, would you say the rigor of the classes adds stress or adds significantly to the workload? I’ve heard about all of the amazing perks of the Honors program, but am wondering whether there are any cons. Thank you.
Have any in-state kids received a $1500 scholarship? I know my S22 did, but I don’t remember when. D24 has the $5000 for honors, but we are curious on the other.
For DS, the depth of the content in some of the honors classes (calc, physics) was challenging - but the smaller class sizes, access to professors, and a generous curve made up for it. IMO the scheduling flexibility (earlier enrollment, gen ed substitutions) make it worth it for sure.
We haven’t received anything apart from the honors invite, not the 5 k nor the 1500!
Did you receive 5K with the honors invite? Like the previous poster said we also don’t have anything other than the invite.
Mine is in honor college at MSU. MSU honor college offers classes with (H) and also regular classes with honors option. Professors decide what kind of extra assignments for regular classes with honor options get offered. My DD had writing 7? journals for philosophy class, reading a book and writing a report for chem class, making video for neuroscience class etc. Here are some lists of examples for honors option. Not all the classes offer honors option and she had some classes that professors told them that they don’t offer them at the beginning of the semester but good amount of regular classes offer them.
Honors Option Examples - MSU Honors College
Students need to take 8 classes with either honor course or honors options with one major (I believe 10 classes with double majors but not 100%). The perks that come with honors college are great so I would highly recommend trying if your student is invited! There are a lot of ways to fulfil honors college requirements.
Yes, she did. The honors invite was there and the tab for scholarships and financial aid had the $5000 honors scholarship listed. I thought the $5000 was for all honors, but maybe it is not.
Great information, thank you!
Thank you so much for the feedback everyone. Sadly, DS hasn’t received an invitation yet. We know he has the option to apply anyway and he may do that. Otherwise, from a pre college multi cultural business camp this past summer, he made a great connection with a student program director there, and we will encourage him to find other supportive programs through that connection to make MSU more easily navigated. He is deciding been University of Pittsburgh and MSU, two very different schools. I’m glad he has time to look into each some more before making a decision. The Honors Program would certainly have helped, but I trust there are many ways to find your way at MSU.
