Michigan Tradition Scholarship

My child received a Michigan Tradition Scholarship today. According to the Univ of Mich website, this scholarship is only for in state students. My child is an out of state student. Did any other out of state students receive this scholarship?

Hi, I am an in-state student and I received a Michigan Tradition Scholarship, however, I am listed as out of state because I live right on the border of Michigan/Wisconsin. I looked it up and it did say it was for in-state students only. I’m thinking that there might be a miscommunication problem with the various departments? I haven’t contacted anyone about this yet.

We are out of state as well, and my D was offered a total of 40K over 4 years total. Unfortunately, she will not be using it as she was accepted ED at another school. Hope that someone else can benefit from it.

Attention all OOS scholarship receipients: Please share your stats (ACT/SAT, NMF? uw/GPA, AP classes, special circumstances etc) for those of us who are anxiously awaiting some merit $$$$$$$$. Thanks so much.

haha mindbender I wouldn’t mind taking that scholarship off your D…lol

My son, who is a District of Columbia resident, received a letter yesterday offering him a Tradition Scholarship of $10,000/year for four years. In his case, though, the true value of the offer is effectively $0. All DC residents are eligible for DC Tuition Assistance Grants in the amount of up to $10,000/year to help make up the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at state schools (a program set up because DC has no public university system). DCTAG isn’t based on need or merit – you just have to be a DC resident enrolled at a state school and get your application in early enough to be sure they still have money left. I’m not actually sure they’ve ever had to turn anyone down due to lack of funding. The Michigan letter specifically says that the Tradition Scholarship will be reduced by the amount of any DCTAG assistance. My son was initially excited about the letter, but once he realized that it wouldn’t change his cost to attend Michigan at all, a bit bemused by the offer.

My D’s stats were: GPA UW: 3.87 GPA W: 4.57 ACT: 32 Lots of leadership and community service. In spite of this, we were very surprised at the offer of money

Don’t underestimate the power of recommendations and essays. My son’s stats were technically lower than mindbender’s D (although from a well-known G/T program) and he received this scholarship last year – as did a number of students (if not all) admitted at his school. Yet I know of others with much higher stats that didn’t. There really does not seem to be an obvious formula in the case of the Tradition and Experience – it seems to be more admit comm’s overall rank of your app (eg Highest admit) which because it’s holistic, is not exclusively dominated by the stats.

I also recieved the Tradition Scholarship. I am from Maryland.

My state were 3.94 W and a 30 on the ACT.

I have taken 7 AP’s, have had several internships and several positions of leadership within my school.

Stats don’t matter for this scholarship. The Michigan Tradition Scholarship is a scholarship for students from underrepresented high schools, geographic areas, and socioeconomic populations

I recieved this scholarship, yet I’m also OOS and don’t necessarily represent a student from an underrepresented high school, geographic area, or socioeconomic population.
Is it possible that Michigan changed the requirements for this scholarship? There’s at least one other girl from my school in the same position as me who recieved the scholarship. A little confused, but honored nonetheless.

I am wondering the same thing. My child said that several of her classmates received the scholarship. We live out of state, and also don’t appear to meet any of the criteria you mentioned. Our high school is very high achieving and sends at least 10 students to Univ of Mich each year. We too are confused, but thrilled and grateful.

likewise. almost everyone at my school who was accepted to Umich recieved the scholarship.

And we also send 10+ kids to Umich from maryland nevertheless.

D also received this scholarship (plus another one worth a total of $4,000 a couple of months ago from UMich for out of state students). We are out of state and as others have said, not from an underrepresented hs, geographic area or socioeconomic population. Her hs is a top nationally ranked public school and sends 20+ students to UMich each year (with many more accepted). Have heard of several students from our hs that received this scholarship offer today.

Best to all awaiting news for this and/or other scholarships from UMich.

I have a 3.90 and 33 ACT…I’ve been accepted for a long time, but i just sent in my FAFSA and didn’t do my CSS yet. Im kinda hoping for this scholarship or something because every person from my school to go to UM in previous years got a $10k/yr scholarship, I dont know if it was the tradition or not

Geee…we are from Nebraska. Son has 4.0 uw 3.3 weighted, 10AP, 33 ACT good EC with leadership, lots of community service…but he is white…middle class and still no $$. You are right I guess there is no secret formula. He did apply to COE…maybe that is a tougher standard for OOS.

I also haven’t recieved anything. I am getting kind of worried.

^Seconded!
