Hi. friend's niece applied to U Chic and U of M, and she is torn between the two.
She says Chicago is ranked higher and really prestigious and everything, but at Michigan, though lacking in the SAT department, guys there are really hot. Which one is better school? Thanks.

Since she made reference to "hot guys", that tells me she's not the kind of person that wants to be in "U Chic" (I mean Chicago).

I think Chicago is a better school, but their atmospheres are very different.

Depends on what she wants to go into. I'd assume if she's looking to do engineering or business, she'd go to UMich.

UChicago likely has things it beats Michigan in, but I'm not exactly familiar with the school.

Two different environements, that's for sure. I don't think she can go wrong at either institution. They're both amazing.

They're both good schools. Finances may play a part. I would echo, however, Sam Lee's point. If she's thinking about making her decision on where to go to school based on the "hot guys," the culture at the University of Chicago is probably not for her.

I think you might want to consult your neice and inform her there is more to college than hot guys and SAT scores...

U Chicago has higher prestige but U Mich is soo high on the list that it doesn't even matter. If you are looking for a giant (30,000 kids) state college experience with high prestige--Michigan is the place for you. If you are looking for a smaller private instituion that is in a big city, with high concentration on the sciences--U Chicago is the place for you.

Good Luck

I think that from her comment, your friend's niece would enjoy the UofM environment much more. The social life is generally better: more parties, great sports teams, something for everyone. UChicago is an excellent school and so is UofM. UofM would be better for her if she wants to major in business, social sciences, engeneering, or arts. Also, Michigan puts much less emphasis on SAT scores than most schools. In fact, they dont even want SATIIs and they encourage the ACTs, so it is hard to judge their student body based on SATs.

Whats next? Michigan vs Harvard?

nefer,

This is a joke, right?

I like your sense of humor.

"Whats next? Michigan vs Harvard?"

UChicago!!! Cause Harvard is just the UChicago of the East! Hmm, def go to Chicago so your GPA can go gown on you instead of "hot guys"... at least thats what I would rather have go down on me...

"guys there are really hot"??

Are you serious? Tell me this girl didn't get an acceptance letter from UChicago.

First it's Northwestern, now it's UChicago. Yep, Harvard's gonna be next. Michigan people really are funny.

you only say that because you go to UChicago. I am looking at both schools, and yep, it seems like UM has a higher average ranking in their majors than UChicago... of course UChicago dominates UM in science, but it's not huge difference.

no i completely agree, UChicago>Harvard...UChicago is one of my favorite schools, I would never go to Harvard, this was just making a joke about the fact that there are threads about Michigan vs BC, Northwestern, and UChicago on this forum

Michigan > Harvard

^ This person just completely proved my point.

collegebound_07, please elaborate on how Michigan > Harvard.

nefer,
You're a devil. :) Very, very amusing...

LOOK AT USNEWS RANKINGS for each discipline. Michigan is significantly better in almost every category than both Harvard and UChicago. Its also half the price, has some deep school spirit, great at sports, is public, has much more diversity, and is a much more balanced school in general. NCAA Football Champions next year too!

Chicago, in case you didn't notice, people are just having fun here. You didn't object to the poster who stated that Chicago > Harvard did you? I guess you think that's true? Everybody knows Harvard is > than Chicago and Michigan!

Hawkette, I don't see anything wrong with Nefer's question, although I agree that it was probably intended as a joke considering the other two Michigan vs... threads! Many students are faced with the Chicago vs Michigan dilemna. The two schools are so different, that naturally, students are torn between the two. I certainly was when I was deciding between which college to attend.

Graduate departments...
