Michigan's rep

Massachusetts

There's more to Illonios besides Chicago, that is news to me!

Delayed WOW...

As a person who’s lived abroad I always get “Michigan state“ when I say Michigan, after saying “no, its in Ann Arbor” usually they say “Oh, University of Michigan” and start talking about how academically outstanding it is.

Most of them know the Big House and frequently relatively older folks mention the Apollo UM crews.

UM’s world wide rep is excellent esp in Europe.

P.S
Most people out side the US tend to remember most US schools that has a state name as X state university, so Cal is California State univ and Penn becomes Penn state

Christine, speaking of the South, you may find this funny (and hopefully not offensive ;)):

fill in the stars

f***thesouth.com

yeah.. for international people, its better to tell them 'university of michigan ANN ARBOR" and then they're like ooOoooh.

Christine123, actually I'm more like 532.8 miles from U-M, using Mapblast (I actually live on the border of Brentwood/Nashville).

Being in Toledo, Ohio

Someone: so what school do you go to?
Me: the University of Michigan
Someone: Ann Arbor?
Me: Yea
Someone: I forgive you (in referring to osu vs mich)

or

Someone: so what school do you go to?
Me: the University of Michigan
Someone: Ann Arbor?
Me: Yea
Someone: oh wow, that's a really good school!

.....lol

I'd say after going to U-M for two years and knowing all about what it has to offer, I can't think of many universities that are as underrated as Michigan.

MatthewM04, hehe...as long as I don't take it seriously, that is. ;-)
Oh, I love the South, but I love making fun of it more.
And ah, Brentwood. Many Brentwood soccer tournament t-shirts lying around my house...
And I entirely agree about Michigan being underrated.

I've actually never had anybody tell me, "oh UM is a great school". I always get "It's really cold" and then "they've got great football". Maybe it's just being in the south.

I get a mix of the two. You live in the middle-of-nowhere culturally-southern part of Florida, don't you?

Yeah, I agree that most people in the South are ignorant when it comes to the quality of UM.

most people in the South are ignorant of anything :0

but seriously, the UM ass-licking in this thread needs to stop...yes, it's a good school, but there's a lot of things here that just plain suck. college is much more about the student than the college...damn i wish i had better rhetoric

Eww...ass-licking. Yuck. And most people in the South aren't THAT bad...hehe.

When I was in France, our tourguide knew of UofM b/c he had received his master's in law and languages from the Sorbonne and his boss at the law firm went to Michigan's Law school. Also, when we were in some small village touring a chateau of the Loire valley, one random guy saw my "michigan medical" shirt and asked if I went to the med school and later remarked how outstanding Michigan is!

i can't believe they let u type "ass" now...but then i tried **** and it got sensored

So far only two or three people have recognized the greatness of Mich when I told them that I was going there.

One response that I don't understand is "Which campus?" I feel like being sarcastic and saying Flint...but that would only confuse the person.

Let me put it this way. I am from Chicago and Michigan has a stellar reputation in Chicago and an enormous and powerful alumni network rivaled only in Chicago by Notre Dame.

I live in DC and Michigan has a stellar reputation here. This is probably accentuated because UVa is an excellent school as well here and there is a competitive aura (healthy, I think) between the two as they are among the best publics.

I have an office in New York and find that Michigan's reputation in New York may even outstrip the one it has in Chicago. This is so in part because the power brokers who run New York think highly of Michigan's business and law schools and hire a bunch of them. And the alumni network is powerful.

I don't know how Michigan's rep is in Atlanta, Miami, etc, but the point is that it truly has a national and international reputation. So given that college is an opportunity more than anything else, it is hard to find a negative with Michigan.

Bottom line is that Michigan is plenty well thought of. The focus should be on getting the most out of what Michigan has to offer. And with top 10 graduate schools in an unfathomable number of fields, it is really a place for choice and opportunity.

Biased? Yes. My grandfather went there and I am doing backflips that my daughter is going. Can't wait to see her happy there.
