micro-fridge

I'm going to send all my packages and order things online to send to my dorm just before I arrive (just in case my stuff might be lost if they were sent in early...). I'm also going to rent a micro-fridge online. Has anyone had any experience with this? If I order several days before I get there, will it be at the front desk of my residential hall for me to pick up? What about the deposit? Or should I order it after I get there?

My daughter rented one during her years in the dorm. You should go ahead and rent it online now. Then on move-in day, you pick it up in your dorm…make sure you first grab one of the dollies before you get in the line to get it. They’ll have people around to tell you where in your dorm you go to get it.

I looked up the price online for buying a microfridge. Some doesn’t even cost more than $200, but it costs $200 to rent one from Bedloft.com. Do you recommend buying one instead of renting? (afterall, if I rent one for 2 years, I might as well buy one for all that money)

Unless you plan to be doing a lot of eating/microwaving in your room, I think you can do much better buying a small refrigerator and a microwave. I saw a small fridge at Target yesterday for $50, a larger one runs about $100. and there are microwaves for $30 all over the place. Put the microwave on the top of the other and you have your own “microfridge”. I bought my daughter a rubber mat to put on top of the fridge so the microwave didn’t slip around. Done.

Thanks for the advice! Does UMich require “one-plug” so that there won’t be any overflow of electricity? Or is it fine to buy them seperately? I heard that some rentals were dirty and even had cockroaches in it…I’m an international student…do they do the deliver when you buy it at Target? Can I just buy one on the Target website?

Two more questions…if I order linens and micro-fridge online now, will they be delivered to my dorm right away (should I order them ASAP as renting a micro-fridge combo…?) Or is it better to order it before I arrive (will there be a lot of hassel then?)

Did you find cable necessary? (then I’d have to buy a TV right…?) Should I cancel it now? (what’s the deadline for canceling it? a week after school starts?)

Target would deliver if you order on the website, but I don’t know whether the dorm will accept the delivery and store the stuff of such big items. You should call them and ask. There is a Target store a few miles from campus, you could order the items on the website to be ready for you when you arrive on campus, and then you could take a cab to get them. Or, there is a bus trip for freshman to Meijer another big store near campus and you could get the stuff there.

If all this will be too much for you when you first get to campus, it might be worth it to just get the rental, which you can order in advance, and it will be delivered to your dorm room with no hassle. It just depends on how comfortable you will be getting it done by yourself and how big an issue the extra money will be for you.

There are a couple electrical outlets in the room, we got a extension cord/serge protector with multiple outlets for all the electronics.

Why would you buy 7 year old appliances when you can spend the same money and buy new? And you’ll have the same delivery issue as you have with ordering over the internet. In fact you have to arrange for delivery from Louisiana which is a very long way from Ann Arbor. This looks like a bad idea.

Know that some of the cheap fridges are just expensive coolers and will not actually keep things appropriately cold. If you want a real fridge you have to make sure that’s actually what you’re getting.

The only reason renting the micro-fridge made more sense for us was because we’re OOS, and the thought of moving a refrigerator and microwave in/out of the dorm to a storage was daunting for my D and I, not to mention what condition they’d be in by the end of the summer. Also, we would have had to go through the hassle of selling them when she moved into her house this year.

Another bonus with the micro-fridge rental is that the freezer space is larger than most of the ones for sale have…great if you like to have frozen dinners, ice cream, etc. on hand.

This one seems to have a really cheap price for all that freezer space…I ran a search on the Target site; they seem to have it in Meijer. How can I ask them to hold it for me on that website?

I prefer to order it online (does that seem much more expensive that the fridge in a Target store?) Also, is it free shipping…? I live in Bursley…if I order online now, Bursley would hold that for me to pick up when I arrive on campus?

Any advise? Could anyone recommend an inexpensive microwave online? (or fridge if the given one doesn’t actually work well…) Thanks!

Sooldmoon, you are from out of country, correct? What do you intend to do with the fridge over the summer? If you have to pay storage or shipping (it would be a fortune to ship overseas) you’d be FAR better off financially and in terms of convenience to just rent the combo unit from housing.
Also, if you don’t have a car on campus, how would you get the fridge over to a summer storage location? The storage vendors are not on campus.

Also refer to the housing site, as I believe there are specifications about the size of fridge, amp draw and the wattage of the microwave that is allowed.
Good luck! Just trying to help you avoid a hassle, but perhaps I am misinformed about your plans.

Thanks for all your advice! Does anyone know how much it takes all together for me to store the fridge https://www.target.com/s?keywords=Em...&ref=sr_bx_1_1</a> and microwave [GE microwave brand new](http://annarbor.craigslist.org/hsh/1889873020.html) for 4 months during the summer using the John’s Pack & Ship UM storage service? Ordering online/having someone delivered to me would me all the hassel for the beginning for my first year…plus it’s a bit more than 200 bucks…worth it than renting one for years…I’m trying to see what it costs for storage…together with the price for a microwave and a fridge, if the storage doesn’t cost too much than renting it for two years ($400…) then I’ll do the purchase…

Thanks kmccrindle! Sorry I didn’t see your post before I posted my post (something wrong with internet…) Yes, I am from out of country…storage is one of the things I’m concerned about…according to John’s Pack & Ship [Storage prices, 0-4 months | John’s Pack & Ship](http://www.moveum.com/storage), I don’t know the approximate price for a microwave and a fridge plus all the other stuff and insurance fee…(I’d have to use the storage service anyway…), but Michigan seems to have these “stations” in front of several residential halls (and bursley is one of them…) that you can just drop off your stuff…I guess it’d be a hassel to move those heavy items down the stairs, but if it saves the money of renting a combo (and if it doesn’t cost a ridiculous amount of money to just store them…) I’ll buy them.

Also thanks so much for your reminder about the amp draw…I was wondering if the two items listed above fit the UM requirements…fredmar suggests early that that wouldn’t be too much of a problem, so I didn’t pay much attention to that…(I believe the two-door fridge is a compact mini fridge…not sure about the microwave…)

You’ve already spent way more time on this decision than is warranted by the importance of the decision. The advice I contributed did not sufficiently take into account you being an international student and all the storage issues that entails. I would suggest you get a rental.
