Microsoft Internship or DECA President?

I’m caught in a tough decision for what I am going to do this summer. I have just been offered an internship at Microsoft in the Global Accounts Division. This would really help me get into college because I want to major in business.

I have a problem with my summer schedule though. I am the DECA Area 4 President for WA state and that requires me to go to two camps during the summer. Microsoft says that they need me during the whole summer.

So I am caught between whether I should resign from my position and go with Microsoft or stay in my position as President of a widely recognized organization.

Both have great benefits. Also, I already have a job as a web developer for the new www.teenjobs.org so it’s not like I am desperate for work experience. However, I also have another leadership position as Senior Class President, so it’s not like I am desperate for extracuriculars.

Forfeiting the presidency would be letting a lot of people in the organization down.

Microsoft or DECA President?

I have to make the decision by tomorrow afternoon.

do the internship

I say that because if your going into business from around here (northwest) microsoft is a great place to get connections. For college admissions i am not sure. I do know that this could make an interesting essay topic (your decision, what it meant, results)

Do Microsoft, because nationals is at Texas this year and I'm assuming it will be horrible (whereas Anaheim was sweeeet)

b/c you were selected by your peers. Your position allows you to meet and associate with people that you not normally have access to. You can have lunch with Bill.

An internship. So what. There are a lot of smart people. Very few are smart and can lead. See if you can do lunch with Bill as an intern.

BTW why don't you email Bill's office and see what they recommend?
Do you want to work on a business or do you want a job in a business. The internship may give you pay, but Bill makes the money. The Presidency can show you how to have a business that hires interns.

Well...the President of DECA really doesn't do any of that...its more for running things and listening to what the state board of directors tell you. Its not that bad, since you get to go up on state at the state conference meeting and talk and stuff, but you don't really do anything very business-y.

DECA...you can't just abadon people as president!

wait yeah...I forgot about that...So you already ran at the state conference, won, and are thinking about backing out?

Yes, i am already elected and I would have to resign in order to take the internship

i am more concerned about which opportunity will benefit me more in terms of college admissions.

This is a parents point of view- so take it with a grain of salt. Stick with Deca. You did make a commitment to your constituents and it may sound corny but it is the right thing to do. It also sounds like a more unique position than the internship. It can also help you develop a higher level of leadership skills. Good luck with the decision but my vote goes to Deca.

I feel your pain Rob. I hate it when ECs, work, etc. conflict.

internship for techs like MIT and CAltech; they dont care about ECs as long as you spend your free time with college professors in a lab

Deca for others

Internship. There's bound to be a person who's more than willing to take over for you in deca - it's not as if you're the only one capable there, right?

well, my main goal is to get into UC Berkeley, NYU, and Harvard

my EC's are:
National Honor Society
Senior Class President
DECA Chapter President
*VP of Community Relations of Area 4 DECA
2004-2005 Multicultural Student Association VP
Link Crew
Renton Youth Council

*If I resign from Area 4 President, I have the option of becoming a VP

Yes, and it can readily be decided who will replace me. The runner up for the Presidency actually is a current VP. If she becomes President, I will be able to take her VP position, which does not have the responsibility of summer camps.

^... you must be pretty charismatic....?

i say take the internship. no matter what the "right" thing to do at this point is, the internship will help you better in the future. all that "people are relying on you" crap is b.s. 20 years from now, are you still going to be surrounded by your friends in society?? i may be selfish, but if i were you, i'd take the internship. it helps you more. besides, this one sounds like its better than the web designer job even though thats cool too.

if you dont want it and you are in illinois ill kindly take it off your hands :)

btw..im sure SOMEONE can take over for you as president anyway.

DECA. this is a special opportunity for you, and it will definitely help your extracurriculars with more leadership positions. & this is a one-time chance.

Microsoft Internship. that can come at a later time.

of course, the final decision is going with what your heart thinks. :)

but do you think DECA will help out my EC that much when I already have:

Senior Class President
DECA Chapter President
VP of Community Relations of Area 4 DECA
2004-2005 Multicultural Student Association VP
National Honor Society
Link Crew
Renton Youth Council

Also, do colleges even give DECA a strong recognition like they do to a international corporation like Microsoft?

Again, my main goal here is college admissions. If I did the Microsoft internship next summer, college applications would already have passed.

It seems like you've answered your own question. Internship it is.

sorry i dont have any contributions, but i would like to semi-bump his question because im curious about the answer:

what weight do colleges put on holding a DECA state office? is it really a big deal, not that impressive, or somewhere in the middle?
