I just got my new MacBook (which, btw, is awesome) but I don’t have any mac-compatible word processing software. Is it possible to download Office 2007 from Brown at a reduced price? Or would it cost about the same as buying it from, say, Best Buy or something?

Office 2007 isn't available for Mac. They haven't updated Office since '04, though I think there are plans to do Office '08. I wouldn't wait on it though, since none of the Office updates on Windows have been impressive and '04 more than covers your needs.

While I've never been to Brown's student store and can't say if they have discounts, MS Office Student/Teacher Edition (which has Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Entourage) runs for about $150. You can't really get a student discount on it, either, since the student/teacher edition is priced with what would be the educational discount.

NeoOffice for free.

Done.

Hmm, glad to see they improved that. It was still having some issues a few years back when I got my last iBook

WHy don't you run windows on it and use office?

I think brown student store has Microsoft Office 07 Standard for 90$ and Professional for 100$.

Office '03 standard is 45$ and Professional for the same is 55$. Still confirm it though.

Windows runs slowly (on a Mac or not). And it's a pain to have to continually swap operating systems, especially with something as simple as word processing.

Windows runs the same on Mac as it does on any PC using bootcamp, slightly slower if using virtualization like Parallels, but certainly fast enough for even the most resource intense Word Processing.

Sid_Galt -- you're right about the 90 dollars thing, but unfortunately they were "temporarily out of stock". But anyway, I managed to find a friend who was willing to let me use a code. Thanks for all the responses!

I wasn't saying it ran slower on a mac, rather that it runs slowly in general.

and again, if he can get either free software for mac, or office '04 for mac, why bother with the constant switching?
