Here is a new one...the housing office took my sons microwave over break! Just confiscated it right out of the room! Yes, he has a separate fridge/micro, but he was in SOHO and the wiring is brand new, so I did not think it would be an issue. Guess I was wrong!

It is stated numerous times in the housing documents and to the students that the only microwaves allowed are the micro/fridge combos. It is an issue of load capacity if everyone had their own. They draw a lot of juice. Apparently the combo ones are designed to draw less current.

what’s soho? is there a new dorm?

It is officially called Weatherhead Hall, but before they gave it that dedication it was (and still is) being called Soho for “Sophomore Honors”. It is next to Butler and this is the first year of occupancy.

I get that he was not supposed to have it, but just taking it is going a little too far. How many pictures of 19yr olds have I seen on facebook with loads of alcohol in the background? Confiscate that stuff instead. Gee, it is a microwave, not anything illegal. How 'bout you unplug it and leave a note saying you can’t have this. Some little person thinking they had alot of power went overboard.

Hi, riroka, I am an RA work for the housing office and I can explain why we took your son’s microwave. First of all, it was during the annual health and safety check for the dorms. We look for any violation of housing contract and university policies during the check. We also have warned the residents 24-48 hours before the check, so people had enough time to get rid of whatever violated the policy since we don’t want to confiscate anything either. It is kind of stupid that microwaves are not allowed, in fact, rice cookers or other small appliances are not either. But we have to do what we are told to do, so sorry about your son’s loss of the microwave.

Thanks for the info. So, is the microwave gone for good?? It was kind of a nice one…

if you think that’s bad, you better tell your child not to leave the laundry in the laundry room for more than 72 hrs or they give it to the salvation army. LOL no joke! my son lost have his clothes 1st semester that way. they literally gave it away the next day.

No, your son will get an email from the Area Director and be asked to give a disposal plan. He needs to either store it off campus or send it home. If he is convincing and believable, the microwave will be returned, but he cannot have it in the dorm anymore. We are not allowed to keep anything if the resident is willing to correct the mistakes.

At the beginning of this year, my microwave was confiscated as well. The problem with these health and wellness checks was that they were doing them during a school break when they KNEW students would be away. One of my friends got a fine for having something covering her light and for her sliding closet door being off the hinges (it was broken when she moved in). Yes they gave her 24 hours notice, but she was out of town and had no way of knowing. How ridiculous.

It’s really up to the RAs doing the check. Some are more considerate and some aren’t. I did mine the week after the break and didn’t confiscate anything, since people had advanced notice. I guess some RAs are tougher than others when it comes to rule enforcing.

Interesting, I didn’t realize the RAs got to choose when they did the room checks.
