are we allowed to have microwaves in our dorms? what about refrigerators?

I think you're allowed to, but you probably won't need one. If I'm not mistaken, there is a microwave on each floor of every dorm if you absolutely need to heat something up. I'm still not 100% positive that you're allowed to bring one though, perhaps a current student could clarify this.

No, you are not allowed to have them unless they are purchased as part of the "micro-fridge" contraptions that the university rents out. But saying that you aren't allowed to have microwaves in your dorm room is like saying that you aren't allowed to have alcohol in your dorm room. It's technically a true statement, but since there are no "room checks" or other such nonsense, who's going to find out? Plenty of people have microwaves, toasters, coffeemakers, and a pleathora of other appliances that suit their fancy in their rooms. They do do a mid-year check at the beginning of winter break (just for safety stuff, i.e. to make sure the building doesnt burn down during the break), so i'd hide it then but other than that it shouldnt be a problem if you really want one. As for fridges, you can have them but they have to meet this strict set of guidelines written by the university. However, again, no one really pays attention.

are there ever waits to use the communal microwave perro?

Fridges are okay, but the microwave we had last year in Donlon tripped the circuit breaker after roughly 15 seconds of microwaving.

perhpas that is why they're not allowed

is there cable in the dorms

There are never waits to use the communal microwave. Microwave popcorn, by the way, is the number one cause of fire alarms going off at 3 AM and causing entire buildings to empty and their residents to stand partly clothed in the freezing cold while waiting for CUPD and IFD to arrive on scene....

There is cable in individual rooms in Court and Mews but its very expensive. All of the dorms have cable in the lounges, but some buildings get more channels than others. I doubt you will spend as much time watching tv as you think you will though, for you find that there are so many better things to do.

WHAT? You need to pay for cable?

I thought its free...like some/most schools.

they are having cutv or something next yr so even if you don't live in court/mews/townhouses, you can still get cable through your computer ($30/month?) or TV ($40/month?). anyhoo, many people find out that they don't won't watch TV enough to spend that much unless you live in the townhouses and can split it 4 ways. an antenna did me very well when i lived in donlon, i got FOX so that was entertainment enough when i wanted. but, i lived on the 6th floor, so that might have helped. then again, i lived on west, had an antenna and also had a couple of channels including FOX.

i would wait a couple of weeks and see how much time I actually go to the lounge to watch TV. a week isn't enough because the work hasn't piled on yet, and so even after that, if you find you are watching TV a lot, then get the cable/cutv thingy.

you can buy cable but its something like 40$/month, but you should be spending your time with people instead of watching tv. also, microwaves aren't technically allowed but you can bring one if you want. dorm rooms are small so it would be a waste of space considering you can walk 20 feet down the hall and use the communal one.
