microwaves

A quick question:

Am I allowed to bring a small microwave for my room? I'll be living in Wien if that makes a difference. And if it's not allowed and someone (i.e. the RA) finds out I have one, what will be the penalty? (not that I'm planning on breaking the rules . . .)

Thanks in advance :)

Well they’re not allowed if that’s what you’re asking but it’s not that strictly enforced. It really just depends on your RA and if you feel you have the space to use it without starting an electrical fire or smoking up your entire hallway.

If there’s one building where you need one it’s Wien seeing as there are only kitchen areas on the 2nd floor. If you’re bringing one I would pack it in an unmarked box when bringing it into your room.

Wien…Are you a transfer?

Thanks for the advice! Yup, I’m a transfer – going to be a sophomore.

Hypothetically, if one wished to purchase one of these ‘illegal’ microwaves, what/where would be the most convenient and affordable place to do so in the city?

Is there an equivalent of a wall-mart anywhere around? (not that that would be my preferred shopping venue, I’m speaking strictly in terms of having anything and everything you might need to buy)

theres a target at a good distance from campus. ts perfect/

Craigslist.

amen to craigslist. although, there’s a Bed Bath & Beyond at 65th & bway which will sell you a new entry-level microwave for $60-80.

The BB&B at 18th & 6th is larger but harder to get to.

The Target is at 225th & bway, in the bronx. don’t have to be afraid during daylight hours, but it will be correspondingly more of a pain to get there and bring stuff back. prices will be better though.

If you’re in Wien, don’t forget a shower kit to take to/from the bathroom, shower sandals, and other helpful items.

what about a fridge that slightly exceeds the ridiculous limit of 2.5 cu. ft? actually, half of it is a freezer so I could argue that the fridge itself meets the guidelines…maybe?

the limit is not a practical one. just that they don’t want you to have a full-sized fridge while they’re paying the electric bill. 3.5 cu ft was the “limit” when i was there and frankly, nobody cares.

^ My friend hid his full-size fridge in his closet.

^ lol karot. your friend is pretty smooth  How do ppl carry their refrigerators from selling point (looking at fridges on craigslist) to their dorm rooms… plus don’t security guards see how big the refrigerator is? or they don’t really care about the rules either?

security guards are there to interdict people, not appliances.

do the furnald floor kitchens have microwaves?

I saw some small cheap microwaves at target the other day, for about 40 bucks. Maybe I should grab one.

Going from a room with a private bathroom + tub, full fridge, and air conditioning, two walk-in closets… this will certainly be a character building experience.

No. A character building experience would be living in a cardboard box on the street for a week.

:D

The empathy I feel for you at the moment is overwhelming. I must compose myself.

Honestly, this is college. You’re supposed to walk in on a bathroom in the morning and find something brown that could be canned peas, vomit or feces it (and you so will) and re-assess comfort a bit. It’s part of the thrill.

…Then again you’re also talking to a guy who offered to bribe someone 500 bucks for a housing swap of their Watt studio so I do get where you’re coming from.

Gotta say, after living here for a week or so, I honestly prefer it. Or maybe I just forgot what it was like to live any other way?
