Middle Class Parents- a great post on FB

Probably poor form (hopefully not a violation) to mention a post on FB’s Paying For College 101. (Note that while the link appears in Spanish here, it’s in English once you click.)

Middle class kid with high, but not perfect stats makes a very rational choice. Might be the best I have read yet- and I was very thankful for it. Overlap in situation with my junior D was 90% and they really gave me more confidence in my current thinking.

In short, she sees her excellent stats as a way to gain admission to a great school OR a way to get a degree without going into debt (keeping options open). NOT both. She gets the fact that applying and holding for a glitch that makes an elite school affordable is a pipe dream.

Parent and child are a wonderful team and frame the choice in a very helpful way.

There’s a lot of great schools you can attend without going into debt.

Too many define great based on a magazine ranking. And therein lies the problem.

Couldn’t agree more. I really like the way parent and child framed it. The details were very helpful as was the realism.

That’s a good way to look at it. Prestige is actually a just big fat myth perpetuated by the media and college marketing divisions. Smart talented people do well simply because they’re smart and talented. The prestigious university didn’t give them any additional education or skills other than a bachelors degree…but the university made sure you paid a lot more for it. I guess that’s the point, isn’t it?
