Hi all. Congrats to the lucky ones who just got in! I'm the dad of a S who is a very recent grad of Midd and a D who was just admitted to the class of '09 today! I have a lot of experience (from a parent's side) with Midd and the town. If anyone has specific Q's about anything there--at the school or town, I'd be happy to try and address them as best I can. I am a bit biased toward Midd from my 5 years of knowledge about the place, but I think I can honestly answer any Q's you might have. I'll answer on this thread. Again my congrats to the lucky ones who have gotten into a first-class school!

Thanks very much daddo, I haven't ever visited Midd, but I've heard a lot about it from my friends. I plan to go to one of their admitted student days, but perhaps you can enlighten me about Midd prior to April 11th. A few questions I have are, what do you think is special about Midd compared to other LACs? Also, how rural is the town and what is the closest place where we might find something remote to city life? How cold does it get there, and do you have an idea of how cold it will be in April?

There are probably more questions floating in my head, but I'll ask them later.

Thanks in advance! =)

alby--I believe that Midd has some of the best campus facilities (compared to many other small LACs that I have visited). Included are a great student center, a brand new state-of-the art library which opened this past summer. It's the best college library facility I've seen in similar sized schools. Also many recently built dorms and a new dining hall. Also 'Bi' hall--a new (2000) science building is spectacular. I could go on about the campus--suffice it to say that I feel it is one of the most beautiful and up-to-date (facilities-wise) campuses I have seen in NE LACs.

Town--about 8,000 pop. adjacent to campus and easily walkable or bikeable. Very quaint, looks and feels like someplace out of the 50's or 60's. Older but very well maintained structures. Lots of small speciality stores and places to eat. Very beautiful, esp in spring. People seem very friendly and helpful. No big chain stores or restaurants--all small and locally owned places. It is a rural town for sure, but not so small that you cen't get all that you need there.

Cities--45-50 minutes to the north is Burlington--largest city in VT (about 75-80,000?). has all sorts of nightlife, shopping, food, etc. home of Univ of VT. really need a car or someone who has one to get there (about 38 miles). Also about 40 mins south (35 miles) of Midd is Rutland VT (approx 50,000?), not as dynamic a place as Burlington, buts lots of shopping, restaurants, etc. also need a car to get to. those are the 2 biggest nearby cities.

April--weather somewhat unpredictable. Can still snow--esp early in month. very changeable. I'd bet on cool (40-55F) rather than warm for most of the month. First time I visited in late april it was in the 30's w/sleet and snow. So anything is possible!

Hope this helps--ask again if you need.

bumping for the 900th Middlebury post!
