Middlebury RD 2013

Colin.. Midd is one in 6? sheesh.

I looked at their common data sets and son is well beyond their 75th in testing, but here's the contradiction: Application Essay, Recommendations are both only "important" in terms of admission decisions. Interview is listed as merely "considered" BUT both character/personal qualities as well as Talent/Ability are listed as "very important." So how does one discern character/personal qualities without high regard for recommendations and/or essays? Basically, the only things Midd says they don't consider is State residency and religious affiliation. Kind of leaves them a huge loop hole to do whatever the heck they want!!! :)

However, Midd actually admitted 49 kids from their wait list, which is surely a question of their yield on the first go round.

Modadunn, there is no way to be assured that your S, or anyone else's S or D, will be accepted. This entire process is a crapshoot. There is a reason Amazon sells dozens of books from authors who describe this in excrutiating detail. Your kid may be admitted over someone with higher scores. Or, he might be denied admission while dozens are admitted with lower scores. There is nothing you can do about it. If you're pleased with and proud of your S's submission and candidacy for admission, your work, and his, is done. Sit back and relax. It will all play out.

Now. Please repeat this advice to me so that I too may follow it. It is a nerve-wracking time, for sure, and it will intensify in the next few weeks. Joy.

It is a nerve-wracking time, certainly. For any Juniors out there, a piece of advice- find an EA school you like and apply to it next year so that you can have some peace of mind when April roles around. I find that now that I'm into Notre Dame, I'm nowhere near as nervous as my friends who've yet to get in anywhere. (Good EA schools that aren't single-choice: Notre Dame, BC, Georgetown, U Chicago, etc.)

I would have to agree with Colinization on this one. Son applied to GTown and should have perhaps gone EA. But the ED application pretty much was the driving force behind everything else. So I too would recommend a broader attack - -even if you have an ED school. Let's just say that getting two applications done a little early will be better in the long run if you need to complete 8 more by Jan 1!

And LaxTaxi -- I perfectly well know I can't be assured. Been down this road before - although it wasn't nearly this intense (and again, I didn't know CC from a country club) I just thought it odd that Midd calls one aspect of an individual HIGHLY IMPORTANT when it's been gleened from something that is only mildly important.

why do we have to wait sooo long? =( It's kind of weird to be thinking that around the same time frame I will be hearing from all the schools at once. (east coast LA and UC schools) It is going to be very scaryyy. but anyways...on a lighter note...where are you all from? and is middlebury your top choice?

Where did a 1 in 6 acceptance rate come from?

um..last year's acceptance rate for september matriculants was somewhere around 16.8 percent, which translates roughly into 1 in 6 applicants getting in....but that stat was for the most competitive year in Midd's admission history. The acceptance rate will likely rise this year due to the decrease in applications....although the EDII acceptance rate for 2013 september matriculants was only 16.1%..

That doesn't include Febs, though -- does it? I would much rather get in as a Feb than not at all.

Do you guys think listing on the pre-app that you would prefer "either" feb or regular admission is an advantage?

I was wondering that too. I put regular only :(

Perhaps you could call or email and ask them to revise your app. to include either Sept. or Feb. for your admission date. Worst possibility I can think of is they tell you that they can't change it...For what it's worth.

lets keep the countdown...41 days!!

I have a question...So I applied ED 1 and was deferred. At the time my letter of deferral was also online. However, when I log on now it is still online. Shouldn't the status be set back to "Pending"? Also, even if it is not set back to "Pending," will my new notification be available online on March 28 just like all other regular decision applicants?

Thanks a lot in advance

Of course.....

lake144, that's perplexing, but I'm sure it'll work itself out in time. They can't very well tell you you've been deferred RD... :)

Sent my app in by deadline. Hope to hear good news.. as someone from New England Middlebury is one of my few schools I know a disproportionate amount of my classmates also applied to. Everywhere else is far, far, off.

I also said I preferred Feb. Wonder how that will work out.

34 more days

and i have a question:
Midd and the rest of my colleges have everything except my midyear grades (they came out a week ago) and my school still hasn't sent them out - even though I've prodded and prodded the guidance counselor. Will they hold this against me or is it no big deal since some schools operate on trimesters and don't have midyear grades yet?

...33 days

i doubt they'll hold it against you, many schools have all different systems and midyear grades come out when they come out. i'd say just send them as soon as you can.

but i'm not an admissions officer - probably the best answer is to call the admissions office & explain your situation & see what they say?
