Middlebury RD 2013

My school just finished them as well, and my counselor is in Africa this week and the next and he can't do it from there. I just hope it'll be okay with Midd....

30 more days guys!!

28 more - we're finally in the month that we find out - yes!

Oh, god, I want to know, but at the same time I'm absolutely terrified, because it's going to hurt a lot if/when I don't get in to Midd. :( How are the rest of you dealing with the waiting part?

LaMariposaAzul: I am losing my mind - 27 more days!!! it is truly insane! So close yet so far - I have started working out more at home to pass the time and to exhaust me so I can't focus on college. But since most of my time is spent in front of a computer for HW, I still find myself on college confidential, *****, and midd's website - it's pathetic. Good luck!

good luck to everyone and please let me know if you have any specific questions about Midd when you're making your final enrollment decisions...I worked in admissions for all four years of my undergraduate career, tour guided and graduated recently so I may be a valuable resource for you all, if needed! :)

^^^^^^Any insight into how their minds work?? :)

Absolutely…in all honesty, there really is no precise recipe for getting a Middlebury acceptance. Admission is not at all a numbers game…Midd is not looking for the cookie-cutter straight A, perfect boards kind of kid. This is why even individuals with Ivy acceptances may be refused admission to Midd. They’re looking for people who are leaders, will enthusiastically engage in class discussion, utilize the experimental J-term to explore outside their major, attend cultural performances, and all around contribute to student life in meaningful ways. Since Midd is such a small, intimate community, admissions works to construct a cohesive class with a broad distribution of passions and talents, looking for all around wholesome, well-rounded, intellectual and passionate people. I don’t think I met one person in my four yrs at Midd that didn’t have some unique WOW about them…even if it took a while to find out what that wow might be. I remember this one student who I was partnered with in my government class and I really knew next to nothing about him, as he didn’t talk about himself much…but then I picked up the Midd weekly newspaper and discovered that he was a two time kayaking world champion. Who’d a thought?! The biggest old wives tale about admissions, at least at Midd, is that interviews don’t matter and are just for the students’ benefit. WRONG! You can bet that if you had an unsuccessful interview, you have a very slim chance of being admitted. There is an extensive questionnaire that Midd alum interviewers are required to fill out asking about the student’s intellectual drive, passion, well-roundedness and, MOST importantly, CHARACTER! Interviews can really be a maker or breaker! On the other hand, if you’re a great interviewer, it can really put your application over the edge. Midd is all about balance (emphasized on the front cover of their promotional pamphlet--at least when I was there). Yes, many students are star athletes, are outdoorsy and adventuresome…but you will RARELY find a star athlete that is weak academically. In essence, “Middkids” are well-rounded to a tee and open-minded. Keep in mind that Midd heavily recruits international students through United World Colleges scattered throughout the world, and there is therefore an expansive diversity on campus (contrary to another common misconception that the Midd student body is homogeneous--- I had 10 countries represented on my freshman hall ALONE!). Midd seeks out individuals who will make the most of the incredible resources/facilities provided them. Don’t expect to be a book smart, one-dimensional recluse and receive a Midd acceptance. Having stellar boards will only get you so far in the application pool, and even if your boards are mediocre, you may find yourself rising to the top of the admissions pile with an outstandingly written essay (Midd loves great writers—precisely the reason they ask for a writing sample), great recs and a strong interview review. The Midd admissions committee knows who they want and what they’re looking for in applicants---meaning they know who will enjoy/excel at Midd and fit in well. Keep in mind that if you don’t get an acceptance, it isn’t because you’re not smart enough or worthy…it may just be that you really belong elsewhere. Additionally, I saw some posts regarding Feb admissions...it really doesn't matter whether you selected Feb only, Sept only or both. The admissions committee will place you where they deem appropriate. Hope this helps and good luck to everyone!!

Thanks, cientifica. When are decisions announced? Are they emailed, available on Midd's website or snailmail?

My son didn't get called for an interview :( so hopefully that's not held against you if you live in a part of a country where there is a small alumni population or that they at least know you weren't contacted.

Modadunn - cientifica overstates the importance of the interview (on-campus or alumni). While it is true that the admissions committee will consider the interview when making a decision, they also understand that sometimes kids just have a bad day. Interviews are never the deciding factor in an admissions decision - they are only used to corroborate information found elsewhere in the application. It is never held against an applicant if they did not have an alumni interview.

Also, the admissions committee will rarely make an applicant a Feb if they checked the 'September only' box.

Modadunn...the only thing that would negatively impact a student who does not interview is if they choose to decline an alumni interview opportunity. Not being called for an interview will have no adverse effect on your son's application, but more weight will be placed on recommendations and essays, which are the only other ways for admissions to gauge his personal attributes. However, if your son is more impressive in person than on paper, it may have given him an extra boost. That's all I'm saying.

Brassring...If I remember correctly, I believe I received an e-mail from Midd to check my decision online on March 31st, and then the official acceptance letter came in the mail a few days later.

...and in response to the Feb comment, nearly all of my Feb friends had requested "Sept only" on their application, so I would beg to differ with the related comment.

brassring - Midd decisions are supposed to be online March 28th, I think.

Thanks LaMariposaAzul. Congrats on the Wellesley "likely". That is definitely an acceptance. Since Wellesley is rated just ahead of Midd, how does this influence your choice.

Today i got a letter from Middlebury about how they judge applicants, but I got really excited before hand because I thought it might be a decision letter :(

Ahh, natalia, don't you hate that feeling? I have a twin brother who got this gigantic packet in the mail from one of his schools, and I brought it in hoping it was an acceptance...and then it turned out to be some kind of view-book-y thing--such a let down.

brassring - Thanks! Middlebury, Wellesley, and Bowdoin are actually my favorite schools (although I applied to 11...). Certainly, the likely letter makes me feel pretty hopeful and excited, but it hasn't swayed my feelings too much either way--I know all of them are awesome schools, and I'd be lucky to attend any of them (Wellesley being ranked slightly higher doesn't really impact my decision all that much, especially since it's like one spot above Middlebury, which doesn't seem all that significant). So I'm just waiting to hear back from everywhere I've applied, and then I'll look at the financial aid and probably also try to visit places again.

It's funny, I've been focusing so much on getting into college that I haven't really considered all that much how I'll decide where I'm going to end up next fall (assuming I have a decision to make...fingers crossed).

natalia:
Would you mind uploading the mail to us?

Does anyone know if Midd sends likely letters? I read the Class of 2012 thread and it seemed that likely letters were sent to strong applicants in Mid-March. I really hope so... :(

22 days until online decisions are out!
