Middlesex School

thanks
how the class of '12
like what type of kids are they generally
also is there trips for spring sports
thanks again

@sandakm you can definitely PM me if you want

@Hcos12893 Izzy answered a lot of your question. i think she is a freshman? (correct me if im wrong Izzy Busy Bee) junior and freshman courseloads are different; as a junior, sometimes you have days where everything is done by the end of study hours. however, there are days where its hard to do literally everything before midnight. sometimes you will have to do work between dinner and study hours. dinner ends at 6:30 and study hours start at 7:30. a lot of clubs meet at this time, and it is convenient to use it just for fun before settling down for the night.
the tennis and lacrosse teams all almost always have a spring trip, and the crew teams do sometimes.
you cant do anything to influence which dorm you are going to be in. as izzy guessed, the atmosphere of each dorm changes each year.

the class of 2012 is a big grade. there are a lot of different kids. there are quite a few recruits in their grade (there is a vague pattern of the grades alternating between being artsy and being athletic. my grade is artsy, 2010 and 2012 are athletic, etc). they are very intelligent (on the whole they are smarter than my grade and the current seniors). there are one or two kids who have bad reputations and perhaps need better morals, but overall they are good, kind kids. they will accept the new juniors well.

can i PM you, peab2011

yep (10 char)

I will answer your questions as well. I feel like it’s the best for prospies to get as many perspectives as possible.

Sandakm:
What do you like most about Middlesex?
The breadth of opportunities. I know the big admissions thing is that you can be a varsity athlete, active in the arts and a high performing student. And this is true. I think Middlesex was my ideal school because it allows me to do so many different things. I have taken part in many different things and the opportunities have allowed me to discover the things that I want to study in college.

What do you like least about Middlesex?
The lack of time in the day. It’s hard to take advantage of all of the opportunities I want too. I wish I had more time to do more things.

How is the mathematics program, I am really interested in math so how difficult is it?

I think this was already answered, but I fast outline:

You are placed into a math class (usually between 3-6)
The progression goes like this:
3 Algebra 1
4 Algebra end of 1 beginning of 2
5 Geometry
6 Algebra 2
7 Trig
8 Pre Calc

At this point students take different paths.

1) Going through electives:
Math Modeling
Finite
Non AP Calc
Non AP Stats

2) AP Stats

3) AP Calc

If a student gets out of AP Calc, they can take vector and then multi variable calculus.
If you still run out of courses you can take ISPs in math.

How does the schedule work?
I think this was already explained.

How do your classes get chosen?
With the help of advisors to ensure you meet all of your graduation requirements and from help of the college office for older students. As you get older you get more and more choices.

Is there a lights out policy and if yes what is it for 9th graders?
10:30 school nights. Midnight Saturday.

Lastly, are students aloud to have laptops/tv’s in their rooms? (Just curiosity, I know how focused you have to be going to a academically rigorous school like middlesex)
TVs, Game Systems and Fidges are for seniors only. Students are allowed to have computers. Underclassmen are supposed to ask for permission before using they computers (rarely inforced) during study hours. Most students have computers in their rooms but it is by no means required. Each dorm has a printer as well.

I think it might be good for me to discuss the workload here. As Elizabeth said its quite possible to finish all of your work in the time allotted. Freshman can easily finish their work in study hours and dont have to use frees and other free time. Sophomores may need to start using other time and planning ahead. By junior year students are expected to be reasonably good at allotting their time and may go to library to study. Depending on their course load they may need to use frees. Senior year is intended to mimic college. Seniors basically don’t have study hours and can work when they want. I often like to workout during study hours and do other things and do my work during other parts of day. The basic principle is to give some support in the early years as to form intendance and time management skills by graduation.

Thoughts on new juniors. Being a new junior is what you make of it. If you choose to integrate in the community you are like any other student. The trick is to work hard to integrate so that you are not known as the new junior. The number of new juniors taken varies a lot from year to year, it can be difficult being dropped right into the college processes and into an already established grade but it is really what you make out of it

The best boys dorm is Atkins (east) as far as facilities go. Each dorms personality changes every year.

Preseason is different for every sport. Varsity sports have fairly strict rules on how many practice they can have. Some teams choose to have practice for a week before school and then take a break while others start right around when new students come (football). Some other sports just have athletes practice on their own (such as XC). It depends on the sport. If you are a recruit the coach will tell you. You will also get to meet the coach/captains at revisit days.

The three MXers here are all in different grades so this should be a great way to get a variety of thoughts. I have been very active in the arts at my time at MX so I can answer any questions about that as well.

I know this is an extremely late response to this thread, but I’m hoping some of you still get on CC. I’ve been working on my apps and I cannot decide which grade to apply to! Yes I know very late, but literally it’s like the last thing I have to work on. Usually it’s the first thing you decide haha. Well to my question, is it worth applying as an 11th grader? I’m a sophomore right now and can’t decide whether to repeat or apply as an 11th grader. I was shocked that they only accepted 2 juniors last year! Kind of freaked out, I would rather not apply as a repeat because I would need to apply for FA and I probably wouldn’t get it. So any advice?

Is the dress code equally enforced among the genders?

It isn’t, simply by virtue of the fact that there are many more clothing options for girls and more ways to break the dress code. Guys can’t wear jeans or athletic pants and have to wear shirts with collars (or sweaters), and that’s about it. By and large, they stick to the dress code. Girls get a little tricky. Fashions change all the time, and there’s certainly a gray area that no one agrees on when it comes to appropriateness. How much cleavage is too much? How short is too short? How tight is too tight?

Honestly, it depends on the teacher and (unfortunately) the reputation of the person wearing the questionable clothes.

What percent are Day Students at Middlesex?

^coming a month late, and you prbly googled it already. 25% day, and we try the school tries to keep it that way.

This is also a BUMP. MX senior taking questions?

I dont even know why I am on CC right now though. Done with college apps and bored i guess??

How is the integration between day students and boarders? Do the students compete with each other? How is the Ivy placement? How is the math department? How good is your crew team? How are the dorms? What do you like the most and the least about Middlesex? Thanks.

I don’t think there’s much of a disconnection between day and boarding students. The day students are around school not just during school times, all are involved in sports, many are also part of clubs, plays (they have to often stay hours on campus for rehearsals). I have plenty of friends that are day students, some of them drive too, so its nice to go out for lunch or something.

Ivy placement is very strong. Here are the exact numbers last year:
http://mxschool.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/Class%20of%202012%20Matriculations.pdf</a></p>

Last 5 years:
http://mxschool.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/Middlesex%20School%20Matriculation%202008-2012.pdf</a></p>

This year, at least I know of have already being accepted to an Ivy in the EARLY round (regulars are still yet to come):
Princeton: 1
Brown: 1
Cornell: 1
Harvard: 2
Dartmouth: 3
Yale: 1
Columbia: 1 (? maybe it was 2)

Math department is very solid. You take a placement test and they put you in the appropriate class and you go from there. It ranges from Algebra I level courses to Multivariable and Vector Calculus (the course you take after BC calc), and even beyond that, you get to design courses with teachers that can go into specific advance studies in math.

Crew team is alright. We aren’t the strongest in our sports league (ISL). I think the women’s crew might have had a better record than the men’s? (I am not sure, maybe Izzy Busy Bee can help u on that, I know she’s a crew coxswain

Dorms are ok in general. We have mostly singles, so thats nice (of course you can request staying in doubles or even quads). Some dorms are very new, others are a little old but are getting renovated very soon.

What I like most? The friends I made there are awesome. Teachers are very reachable. College counseling is excellent.

What I like least? Not much that I really HATE but I do complain about the Saturday classes, the food (isnt the best), and I wished they had a swimming pool.

Brookie17, Thanks so much.

Women’s crew is fairly strong at the varsity level. I don’t remember the record last year, but we finished fourth in New England. The JV/Novice program is also a wonderful experience. Additionally, it is possible for upperclassmen to pursue crew in the fall as an athletic project–we sent a girls’ four to Head of the Charles this year.
