Midshipman Faces New Charges in Sexual Assault Case

This is hot off the press from the AP:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/25/AR2006092500882.html

This is a case of "good news" and "bad news." The good news: the academy is dropping all charges (without prejudice); the bad news: new charges will be proffered.

The BS reports on this case:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/annearundel/bal-md.ar.morrison26sep26,0,6560861.story

The latest news on this case from the Washington Compost:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/26/AR2006092601354.html

Latest revelation: two rape victims.

From The Capital:

http://www.hometownannapolis.com/cgi-bin/read/2006/09_27-48/TOP

Now we have a face to go with the name.

Unbelievable. To get to a place like USNA and then throw it all away (or have this happen to you, depending on your POV).

Simply unbelievable. :(

thats sick no matter where it happens, USNA or not

Updated article in today's BS:

The latest charges could prove embarrassing to the Annapolis military college and the football team, whose former star quarterback was acquitted in July of rape.

You think so? This would be embarrassing to any college or university. :o

Owens and Morrison have been temporarily reassigned to the Washington Navy Yard.

[/quote]

This means that there is no way that Morrison will be able to graduate or earn a commission unless he ends up on a five-year program at USNA.

These are disappointing and disturbing situations, but as history has shown us, tough to eliminate, conduct code or otherwise.

While there are plenty of potential messages and "issues" in this one, most of which the details remain to be determined, at least among the public, the AD's comments struck me as bush-league back-peddling:

*"This has nothing to do with our program," Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk said. "This is about charges against Kenny Ray Morrison, who was a walk-on on our team and will have an opportunity to defend himself." *

Of course it does. They are the Team's team. And who cares how he made that team, walk-on, blue-chip, or marginal recruit. Talk about bilging?

Whatever the outcome, it's no doubt safe to say that this young man's naval career is over before it's begun. What was he thinking? Or was he? Sad indeed.

Just think: people actually PAY for that kind of "news".

The kid's career is over, and all I can say is, "GOOD!" This is getting rediculous.

He obviously wasn't thinking with his head. And yes, this is sad indeed. :(

The Naval Academy and Coast Guard Academy aren't the only service academys with sexual misconduct cases.

As reported in today's BS:

I agree. He should have received a life sentence. Maybe the sentence will be increased by the appeals court -- but don't hold your breath.

You don't want to know what I'd like to see be made mandatory as punishment for convicted rapists.

Let's just say that John McCain would NOT approve.

Castration???

Then again, he might. Look what it's done for his career.

Liked his book, btw.

Players receive special treatment at the academy, said mids, who are reluctant to talk with reporters because academy officials discourage talking with the media.

"There are so many people here who would jump at a chance to answer that question, believe me," one midshipman said when asked if football players receive special treatment.
