For the top ivies and other top private schools that use the commonapp, when is the midyear report due? What is the purpose of the midyear report? Is it to look for seniors who started senioritis too early or is it actually a factor in the admissions process?

Ideally as soon as your report comes out but I think they are due around February 1.

it better be a factor

Oh and I would think it definitely is a factor, since these are the last academic records they'll have of us before they make their decisions.

It's to make sure grades have been maintained. What I saw at DS's high school last year is that the colleges called for grades of the kids they were going to accept if they have not received them.

so does review of an applicants file typically occur before colleges receive the midyear report? and so it wouldnt play a big role in the actual admissions process right? since from the perspective of an applicant, nothing can really get much better?

AY, got my first straight As since 3rd grade this year. Upward Trend ftw.

The midyear report is actually taken into consideration. Johns Hopkins University, for example, places junior and senior (mid-year) grades as the most important grades.

I personally don't like the midyear report. It is naturally emphasized more than the other six semesters because they are separate from the rest of the transcipt.

but dont colleges have to make decisions before mid year reports are even received? After all, itd only be like a month before they have to disseminate decisions.

im thinking that it doesnt make a whole lotta difference unless theres a big shift in your record good or bad?

like, im a straight A student, will i die if a B comes on my mid year report?

One of my application is waiting for me to submit the midyear report. This is bad news for me because I have a downward trend in grades. But it was a very busy month for me prior to the final examination. Can an explanation for that help me?

i think mid-year reports are the factor to get those students on the borderline in if they display a favorable trend while could result in ... if otherwise...
