Might have a problem

I was acepted to SLS and I really want to attend, but it's during our last week of school and I will miss all of my exams. If I can't go, will it hurt my chances of gaining an appointment?

Most candidates who are accepted do not attend SLS. It can help you to attend but it doesnt “hurt” you not to attend. Our daughter was in the same situation but arranged to have her tests given the week prior so she could attend SLS, so that might be an option if you really want to go.

My son also had his finals and end of semester work conflict with the 2nd week SLS date last year, and there was no opportunity to do the work earlier. The earlier week conflicted with sports playoffs. So last winter, he was disappointed that he could not sign-up for SLS for USMA. Most schools here have finals in early June.

Instead, he focused on getting his application and medical done early. Allwas completed by the end of September.

This, along with academics, sports, and community service resulted in his getting an LOA, and eventually an appointment which he did accept.

Ok thanks a lot for the help. I’ve already tried to have my exams moved but my history exam is a state test and can’t be moved. I’ll definately have my application and forms completed early. I believe I’m qualified I have a 4.75 GPA and 2080 SAT. I was captain of the football team and serve in my community. From your experiences should this be enough?

RE:“… should this be enough?”

Only the admissions board knows for sure.

It will all depend on what the applicant pool looks like. Take a look at the stats posted on the admissions website. Also, your state may be a factor too - some states are highly competitive, while others are not.

Talk to your MALO and regional admissions coordinator - they are your best source of information. Have a candid discussion with them.

“Most candidates who are accepted do not attend SLS”

To clarify: most candidates who receive an appointment to West Point have not attended SLS. I believe that most candidates who are accepted to SLS do attend.

Attending SLS has no bearing on your appointment in that no whole candidate score points are awarded for attending SLS. The advantage of attending is that you get to take the CFA and experience West Point to some degree. It is an opportunity to make a good impression if you perform well over the week. A high percentage of those who attend SLS are offered appointments. That speaks to the selection process - if you are offered an SLS slot you likely have the “package” that West Point is looking for in a cadet.

Ja sorry Ann, thats what I meant, but I see now I wrote it in a confusing way :)

Thanks!

Where can I find how competitive my state is?
