JUNIORS - Need to apply to SLS now

Juniors should be applying to the Summer Leadership Seminar if they haven't done so already. Admission to this 1 week program is done on a rolling basis - it's to your advantage to apply early.

Info on the program (and link to the online app):

http://admissions.usma.edu/MoreInfo/summer.cfm

when do we officially find out if we got in or not?

My son heard 2nd week Feb last year.

The website advised 5-7 business days - although last year juniors heard anywhere from 1 week to 2-3 months after applying. Some are a clear accept, some a clear deny, some in the "too early to tell" category.

As I recall, Shogun's daughter heard within a week.

This year, I sent my SLS app in 2 days before the deadline and got in. I heard a couple of weeks after i sent it in

I did the online application 15 days ago and still haven't heard back...

I know that some applicants have already heard this year. Hang tough.

quick question...

if i'm also planning to apply to the Naval Academy Summer Seminar, should/could i also apply to West Point's SLS program?

I know a lot of people who did the summer programs at 2 or even 3 Academies, and it gave them a great way to see the similarities/differences between them. I only did Navy (which was totally awesome), but a lot of people I met there were flying off to USMA or USAFA as soon as they got home from USNA.

Just a quick question for those who have heard back about SLS-

Do you hear through Email or does USMA send you something through the snail mail (i.e. a letter or packet)?

USMA sent me a letter telling me about it

I have a question, what exactly is this program? I applied becuase my parents made me...they thought it would be a good experience. I don't really know what it is, I don't really think I'm goign to end up applying to West Point, and don't really want to pay to spend a week of my summer there. Please leave the "you do what your parents say?" issue out of this. Thanks!

Incamera, see the link above. There is an online brochure as well. It's a week that gives you broader exposure to both WP and the Army - as well as opportunities to accelerate the application process. The cost you pay is only a fraction of the cost of the program.

If you're truly not interested in WP, it's probably not worth your time.

Cuse0507, the notification is by mail.

KateLewis, thanks. I looked at the website and stuff when I applied, but what I kinda mean is how rigorous are the classes? Like, how advanced is the stuff taught, and what focus is it on? Is it on application of topics (I'm interested in math and physics) or is it like a summer school course teaching calculus and stuff?

the classes aren't tough at all. they were more of an overview of how west point classes would run like combined with a related activity/application.

for example, in the math one, what we did was get lectured about the math classes at wp and then we did a math activity. we had to calculated the angle at which to aim a "tank" to hit the enemy.

hey,

Last year, I actually got in before I applied.

I sent in a Cand. Questionaire to open a file but was holding off to send in the SLS form because I wanted m new SAT scores and my eagle scout to be finalized. I received a packet in Jan, and never had to send in the actual application, (*hint, it is the same as the cand. questionaire, except it askes for your choice of seminars). I later specified my choices, but I was put in random classes anyway.

I reference to doing multiple academies, apply to them all, and also some other summer programs too.

I was accepted to USNA, USAFA, USMA, and USCGA's programs. I went to three, not navy's.

If you have a long school year, you will have a lot of stress with missing school and finals. I made some up in july.

Also, USCGA is in July w/ 3 sessions, the rest are in june. So, new london is good because you can go there without interferring with the others.

Remember, boy's state is this time of year too. I was selected to represent my school as a delegate, but went to Colorado Springs instead. I sort of regret this because WP does not give credit if you do not attend bs, even if you are selected. It did not affect me because I got an LOA. But, if you are super-serious and think WP is the only school for yu, go to SLS and BS to get the credit. I believe SLS has a lot to do with LOAs and BS with boost your candidate score.

All of the programs are similiar.

but, as I heard, navy is really physical

Army is the best, most fun, I thought (but i am bias.)

USAFA was kind of a joke, except doolie day (if you were there, you know what i mean)

USCGA was crazy, really strict: be prepared, i was not! LOL

The people you meet will probably be your future classmates, so be respectful and friendly.

for admissions, just do not do anything stupid, and do good on any physical test. that is basically what they're looking for.

back to boy's state, a lot of people at the seminars either already went or were scheduled to go afterward. so do not ovrlook it. Although kind of lame, I am still angry I missed it.

After the 3 weeks, I had a whole lot of souveneirs and other random clothes, but my academy prefences were still the same...

1 USMA
2USCGA
3USAFA.

Finally, don't fret if you don't get in, don't get freaked out about the packing list if you do get in...

HAVE FUN, it is way better than beast, I am sure of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am new t this and have many questions. You all are very helpful. What is the comparable Air Force deferral option to the Navy's Naps/Foundation program and what exactly is the foundation program?

The USAFA has a prep school like the other academies

http://academyadmissions.com/admissions/prepschool/index.php

I haven't heard about a foundation program for AF and I'm not sure what it is. There are posts about it on the discussions for USNA and USMA.

Just wondering, what part of southern CA? I'm from San Diego.

LA area. Just finished the Summer Session application for the Air Force. Sounds like most on this site are a year older have already done this. Thanks for the help-

I went to the SS for AFA send me a PM if you want any details or such.
