Military Movies

How could I forget Braveheart and Last of the Mohikans.

For Christmas, the torpeodo asked for:
-the Gladiator
-Top Gun
-Braveheart
-Return of the Titans

No doubt will add "annapolis" when it gets released- well, will have to see about that one!

(his cell "ringtone" is the dialogue by Al Pacino- don't know the name of the movie, but it the one about "fighting for those inches"- the "difference between 'winnin and 'losin, 'livin and dying is that you fight for that inch"---please feel free to help me out with where this is from...right now it is escaping me! ) Try waking up to that in the middle of the night when the phone goes off! ugg!!

found it!
-Any Given Sunday

"You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those inches, that's gonna make the ****ing difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying! "

Now that's what I call a wake up call!

MomofTwins....

I was going to add "We were Soldiers" but Aspen beat me to it.

So I will recommend "Stalag 17" with William Holden.

(PS... I absolutely loathe Stanley Kubrick films!)

PM,

How could I forget "Stalag 17"? It's one of my favorite all-time movies. If anyone hasn't seen it, hurry up. It's great.

Also, the John Ford movies like "My Darling Clementine" (not really military, but kinda close) or "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" are fabulous.

The best war movies are

Band of Brothers (what inspired me to go army). BEST MOVIE/ mini series EVER thank god someone agrees with me (Jamzmom)

Saving Private Ryan

Behind Enemy Lines

Caine Mutiny

Rambo 1 and 2 (this deff counts)

Great Escape

For We were Soldiers (once and young)

I was gonna put black hawk down but it was kinda a let down. Something...I just can't pinpoint it made me not like that movie. I'll remember in a few

"We Were Soldiers" is used at USNA for leadership training. For those of you who also like to read I highly recommend the book -- the story is riveting and the writing is very accessible. The author is the reporter/photographer character in the movie.

The Great Santini

Got to love the scene where Duvall and his Marines pretend to chow down on their own vomit, making the prissy Navy Captain's wife turn green.

so a few more for those snowy nights-
-The Eye of the Needle
-Four Feathers
-Gettysburg
-Pearl Harbor
-Kelley's Hero's
-The longest Day
-The sum of all fears
-We Were Soldiers
-30 Seconds over Tokoyo

and "MASH" (oops...does TV count???)

"Mash" was a movie before it was a tv series. Yes, it counts and it was great.

Oh Yeah - THE DIRTY DOZEN!!!

No one has mentioned "Heatbreak Ridge" either.

I forgot about Band of Brothers. That was great! We watched those one right after another continously. Last of Mohicans was wonderful as well. Though some of you didn't like Pearl Harbor, we enjoyed it. Jamz mom- though it is a ladys picture, one could count Sound of Music as well because it was during WW2 and Captain Vontrap was awesome and Maria's wedding dress was fabulous.

I forgot about "24" which has the War on Terror. That is the best show ever made and all seasons are on DVD. Jack Bauer rules in our house. New season starts Jan. 15!!!!!!My son wants to be Jack Bauer.

Have to second - Stalag 17, and The Dirty Dozen. And Mister Roberts and the Caine Mutiny for what it's like to serve under bad commands. And has someone mentioned "Master and Commander" - what a great movie, the battle scenes are fantastic and the music too. One of Russell Crowe's best.

I know this is far afield, but in the 60's I was addicted to the TV show, Combat. WWII at that point was still a very recent memory for my veteran Dad who fought in the European Theater.

Stupidest show - Hogan's Heroes - for making light of the suffering of our POW's and minimizing the absolute brutality of the Germans.

Big Green....Do you know that you can purchase the TV series "Combat"? I just saw it in ACORN, a catalog I received over Christmas.

Yes, Master and Commander was a tremendous film!

My dad is having me watch a bunch of war movies to scare me out of the army, not realizing it just makes me want to go more :). So far, we have watched the Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and Full Metal Jacket. Apocalypse Now is a good movie, but it has a terribly twisted ending that makes it more of a horror flick than a war movie, but I guess it shows what war can do to people. I love Band of Brothers, those are all great movies. The Guns of Navorone (not sure if thats spelled right) is a great movie, I watched it when I was little with my dad. Black Hawk Down is also a decent movie too. Thats all I can think of for now.

1) Battle of Britain
2) Tora Tora Tora
3) Band of Brothers

...

5000000) Iron Eagle (sucks)

Oregon Mom LOL LOL! The hills are aliiiiive.....
I WANT the ship in Master & Commander. I'm a pirate at heart and when I hit lotto, I'm buyin' one! The photograghy in that film was amazing.

If you get to see Henry V with Kenneth Brannagh I think you'll be amazed. It is one of the best Shakespeare plays brought to film and has some of the most incredible battle scenes. Horror and glory of war at the same time. Kids, don't think it will be boring old Shakespeare.

The Sound of Music???? Oregon Mom, coming from a Jack fan, I'm surprised at you. :D
