Milton or Lawrenceville

Both schools are exceptional academically and they seem like really good schools to go to. What is the social dynamic at both of these schools? Like will you be comfortable making friends going straight in, or are there a lot of cliques and social circles? Also how are the weekends? Like are you allowed to hang out with friends at their houses (if they are day students)? and are there lots of fun school functions. Just want to see which school would be a good fit?

Bumpbittybump…

Milton is strong in English & history, lawrence is strong in math & science. All boarding schools are having tons of activities. I have to worry mine spent too much time on social.

really? i heard lawrenceville was known for the humanities?

Yeah, they are. I visited Lawrenceville, but I’ve never been to Milton, so my opinions on Milton are probably not going to be based to factual evidence. However, Lawrenceville is a very warm, friendly community that is completely un-intimidating. Milton, on the other hand, seems like more of a pressure-cooker type of school (again, just based on what I have heard.) Also, Milton has lots of grades in it, I think it starts in kindergarten? And I don’t really like that. One of the reasons I’m so attracted to boarding school rather than local day schools is the fact that everyone is going to be new, and I won’t need to feel excluded or lonely because everyone will be in the same position. That being said, many people have gone to Milton and LOVED it. It depends solely on the person.

Hi my daughter is a freshman at Milton (9grade). I can tell you first hand experience that Milton is not a pressure cooker. They in fact don’t encourage learning for the stake of grade and try to focus the students on learning. At least in 9th grade, there is not even a final exam - only one midterm. Also, among the boarding schools, Milton is probably one of the most nurturing schools there is.

English and history is also Milton’s strength, particularly the English department as many famous writers went through Milton’s English programs. My cousin’s son went to Lawrenceville and I have many friends that went there. Lawrenceville is traditionally more a math/science school. However, they recently make an significant push into the humanities area and has incredible resource - specifically they have a building just for east asia studies!

From my limited understanding different schools have different culture. I would put Milton, Lawrenceville, and Hotchkiss in one camp that are nurturing schools, vs. Deerfield is probably among the more traditional schools
