Minimum Class Size

Does Tulane have a policy for MINIMUM class size? My son is enrolled in a class with only 3 people in it. Will the class be cancelled if it doesn't meet minimum enrollment? He's going to e-mail his adviser to see what to do but I was just curious. Where I work the minimum enrollment to hold a class is 8.

I know Tulane will hold classes with less than 8, because my D had a couple. But I don’t know if there is an absolute minimum. And that 3 could still go up, people are still registering and making changes. I also know that for a while Tulane was considering honors courses that by design would only have 3 students, IIRC. Not sure that ever came about, and in any case probably wouldn’t be relevant to general classes anyway. Let us know what he finds out.

Will do. His adviser is on vacation so he won’t hear back until after the 22nd. Hopefully more people will add the class by then!

I’m surprised as a freshman that he has found a class that is so unique. May I ask what class it is? All of the classes my D scheduled are completely full with waiting lists. She would like to change one of her sections but it seems impossible to do.

@DebmomNY‌ - Tell her not to lose hope. There is still a lot of maneuvering that will go on. I would say almost all students get the courses they want, but it is true that getting a particular section can be difficult. Students that like being up early have it best. Those 8 and 9 AM sections are usually wide open.

My son had a language class with 3 students as a freshman…and one of the students was a Tulane professor!

@Mom0f3 - Oh, that’s good!

as far as the waiting lists go for classes, i never had a problem getting into the class i wanted. tell your daughter to go ahead and attend the class she would like even if she is still on the waitlist. in my experience as long as there were enough desks the professors would go ahead and send in some kind of official class list to let all the students into the class officially if they were on the waitlist and attending. usually students will drop or change classes as well during the first 2 weeks which will open up spots.
