Tyler09, you really don't have a clue. ECs are only one part of the application. They also look at your SAT scores, grades, class rank, rigor of courses, essays, interview, recommendations, jobs, etc, many of which are more important than ECs (colleges have stated this on the Common Data Set). The application process is a holistic one; that is, they look at your whole application. It's not a competition of who has the better ECs.

Yea, I have no idea what Tyler is talking about. ECs are not anything. They're at MOST 15-20% of your Application. That's not God at all. Did you forget about essays and Teacher Reccomendations and interviews and everything else? C'mon now..it's not likeECs are 505 and then Academics like 30% and the rest 20%. ECs are not God. There are people with AMAZING Stats that get into HYPMS that have mediocre ECs but there arent that many people with mediocre stats that get in with Amazing ECs.

sure, if you wanna end up like jian li the textureless math grind...

and foil we're talking about the same thing, you're just not reading into what i said.

Sheed. haha. ECs are not anything.

hey people. i'm starting to look at colleges and i want you guys opinion on if i have a chance on getting into these colleges. my top 4 right now are penn, duke, northwestern, and vanderbilt.
my SAT scores were 750/730/720 (2200), i got a 31 on the ACT, i have a 4.02 weighted GPA, 6 AP classes, i've played 3 years of varsity basketball, football, and track so i have EC's covered. i write sports for my school newspaper which is one of the best in the state (tx), and i'm black.
any help would be much appreciated.

How does your school weight GPA? What is your UW GPA?

For those schools, it helps if you have connections, ie if your parent is an alumni. Is this the case for you?

If you are interesting (have a unique passion, hook, activity, skill, talent) then you will get in if your score is above 1950.

If you are not interesting then you will get rejected even if your score is 2400.

screw ECs, what about transcript strength and GPA?

EVERY applicant has strength of transcript and gpa. And since you can't really go beyond a 3.8-4.0uw or taking the most rigorous classes, students top out. You can't top out in ECs becuz theyre subjective.

Actually, EVERY applicant does not have a strong transcript.

Anyway, doing the bare minimum is hardly the way to get into Princeton, Harvard, MIT, or Stanford. "What do you do to challenge yourself?" is the implicit question in the admission process at any of those colleges.

It doesn't really matter how much more GPA/SAT matters more than EC. Bottom line is, most applicants who gets into the top schools will excel in all of these aspects.
