Minor in CS

My S has an accept from Cockrell (ECE) for Fall 2013. He plans to focus on Comp. Engr with a minor in CS.

a) Does UT allow a minor in CS or does he have to "declare" a double major?

b) How many credit hours in CS in either case?

c) UT CS doesn't allow non-CS majors to take many of the core courses in CS such as 312 and instead asks non-CS majors to take the "Elements" courses. What about the electives such as 350F Operating Systems?

Any insights?

Thank you.

CS Department is making some major changes this year, they are changing CS core classes, giving more space for electives/areas of concentration, and they are changing information available on website.

Your S needs to talk to his academic advisor and probably CNS academic advisor.

I know that before students could take CS classes if they submitted a special request form, but request forms look a little bit different now.

Thanks, @Ya Ya. The information you shared applies to CS majors in CNS and not to other majors, right? My S is going to attend ECE in Cockrell. I agree that talking to the advisor will help.

Yes, it’s for CS major and double major.

I believe you can get some CS certificate and it will be considered minor, but I am not sure. Maybe Elements of Computing Certificate?

Also, official minor undergraduate program is available at School of information

I don’t know how valuable it is, and if it is helpful for engineers or not.

Academic advisors can explain, I am sure.

Thanks. I did some more looking around and found the answer on the CS department website.

They don’t have a ‘real’ minor program. :-(
