Minorities at Princeton?

Umm, it seems that P-ton is not exactly the greatest place for minorities-

i mean of course it depends on the individual,

but there are quite a few posts suggesting that ppl w/ different back grounds do not mingle as much as other schools.

so , what is it like?? esp. for asians-

is it really harder for asians to bicker? : )

and do ppl really hang out w/ the same race, region, background etc?

Yeah, it seems to me that Princeton is like a rich white boarding school. Thats the feeling I get when I browsed through the catalog.

However, I will like to get some opinion from students. Anyone?

55 % of this year's class are on financial aid. 35 % are minorities. But beyond the numbers, Princeton's general environment is far more welcoming than most people give it credit for. Janet Rapelye, who became dean of admissions two years ago, seems particularly committed to increasing diversity on campus. Obviously, some students here are extremely wealthy and preppy, but that doesn't necessarily translate into snobbery.

I think some of the lack of racial mixing is due to the wide range of ethnic and cultural groups on campus. Because I attnd services and frequently eat at the Center for Jewish life, I tend to hang out with a lot of other Jews. People who are active in the Black Students Union and Black Arts Council would likewise meet a lot of other Black students just circumstancially. But I haven't, thus far, observed any racial or religious tension. The administration, especially, seems ready to bend over backwards to accomodate as many religious or cultural needs as possible.

I don't know if it is hard for Asians to bicker. From what I've heard, Cottage has a reputaton for favoring WASPs, while the other bicker clubs are based more on common interest than on background. Certainly, there are Asians in bicker clubs.

Seriously, though, I think you should visit if you really want to get a sense of the campus.
