Minority (AA) Parents in NY

My yearly salary is $38K so I know ahe will get aid. She has a couple of scholarship lined up. She is six feet tall so there is a scholarship with the Tall Club of NY, NAACP Actso and Caribbean orginization.

She wants a small school b/c she thinks the larger schools she will not be too focused in her classes.

Thanks for all the input and the pm Sybbie.

Link of school that have film and performing arts majors

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/majors/brief/major_50_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/majors/brief/major_50_brief.php</a></p>

What school are good merit schools? mY D is just so confused and people are throwing so much info at her. She is attending a science fair for her project today, I hope she wins.

This thread on the parents forum should help giving you a jumping off point

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=52133%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=52133</a></p>

US. news college guide has a list of schools Students receiving the most merit aid

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/webex/merit_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/webex/merit_brief.php</a></p>

I think that you should begin making list

Cross reference with schools that meet your daughter's interests- location, major, etc

cross reference with schools that are need blind

cross refernce with schools that meet 100% of demonstrated need

Cross reference with schools that may be SAT optional

Cross reference with schools that are seeking diversity

My D is taking SAT on mAy 7. She has to put 4 schools to put on the SAT form. I think the first four are free.

maybe try Sarah Lawrence College ? They are big on performing arts and also claim to have a great science department. While I was there on admitance day with my kid. I was talking with a AA mother whose was shocked that her daughter was going to able to afford SLC. The college is seeking more diversity and I assume they are generously subsidizing students from less privilaged backgrounds.

Jackie Robinson Foundation scholarship for minorities. Partners with NYU. May be partnered with others. I think the award is roughly $7500.00.

Long Island parent here. I agree with Sybbie- it's a bit of a time consuming process to figure out does your d want urban-big campus-LAC-etc. etc. But popular schools with metro NY kids that may have a "film" component to it may include Boston U. (good merit aid) Ithaca College and SUNY Purchase but I don't know how their chem/bio major is. My d hates the idea of going to school upstate as she hates cold weather. I've been on the website to Montclair state in NJ. It seems to be an interesting mix of majors-with OOS tuition at approx $10,000 and very convenient to NYC. So that may be another place to look. Also -unfortunately there are just some kids who just do badly on SAT's. My daughter is one of them. She is going to Kaplan (yes-white suburban kid with tutoring) and her practice scores don't seem to be getting much better. She too is taking the test this Sat. She took the ACT in April with hardly any studying as it was a last minute decision to take it then as she was aiming to take the June exam. She did (barely) ok with a 21 which equates to 990-1020. She felt the ACT was not as "mind numbing" as the SAT. The great thing about the ACT is that the scores do not have to be forwarded to the HS or any colleges. She can get the scores and later have it sent to her college of choice. The subject matter of the SAT vs. ACT is not that different. But the tests are formatted differently so if she does decide to take it, she should do a practice test or two just to familiarize herself with the test. Peterson puts out the "Real ACT" book with 3 actual exams. The June ACT is 6/11 a week after the SAT. And yes, kids on LI are taking the ACT in addition to the SAT. Good luck.

Back again. I just checked out one of my favorite schools-University of Rochester. The do have a film Department. It is a mid size university so it has the feel of a LAC and yet all the benefits of a large University. They are generous with merit aid and excellent in the sciences. Beautiful campus. We looked at this school for d #1. This was a serious contender but as d was accepted to Cornell-ILR, she thought that suited her better. But U of R is right up there in quality. Keep us posted.

Paul,

Keep in mind that admissions to the CUNY/SUNY schools like most public universities are more numbers driven that holistic. The SAT range for Stonybrook is 1070-1270.

If student is not appliying through HEOP or an EOP, and does not raise her scores just a little from the PSAT, I would not then consider Stonybrook to be a safety. Just got finished talking to one of my co-workers (son is AA male) who has a GPA similar to your daugthers, internships at Brookhaven Labs, all other kinds of science honors and was rejected from Stonybrook (SAT scores).

Since the regents exams are not until late june and the AP exams should be behind her soon, I agree with marny in suggesting that she register to the June ACT in addtion to the June SAT (especially if she did not have time to prepare for this weeks exam).

She should also consider casting a wider net of schools. all the best

Paul - Does she want to stay on the East Coast? Have you looked into any of the Los Angeles film schools? There her NY location might be useful.

Northstarmom - Is this really common? An hour a day?

From what I have seen, far more white and Asian students take tutoring and do regular practice (such as an hour a day over the summer) for the PSAT.

Our daughter aced the Math SAT but did not score up to her potential on the verbal. To practice, I bought her the 10 Real SATs and she made my husband and me take the practice tests with her!! This was a great motivator for her and then we scored each other and talked through the ones where mistakes were made. She ended up improving her score considerably over the PSAT and got into her first choice school early decision after taking the SAT just once (it got snowed out when she was supposed to retake the exam). I actually think her adcom probably though it was refreshing that she hadn't obsessed over taking the SATs multiple times.

We'll this week my D had 2 AP tests (english & U.S.History) and the SAT on Saturday. It is very stressed week for everyone. My income does not apply for HEOP or EOP and her grades are too high for it, I checked already.

Sybbie, the point about Stonybrook about the person who didn't get in is odd.

Was just on Suny site for my d. Apparently Univ. of Buffalo has a film studies program. Hope this info is helpful.

Remember that public U's are more # based (SAt is given so many points, GPA is given so many points other factors in your app are given points and you must achieve so many points to meet the threshold) It is also more of a computeried system even though your daughter may meet the threshold, if the school takes 6000 kids with the highest scores. If your kid is 6001, then they could be out of the running.

IF the pool at any given time has a bunch of top heavy candidates (1450-1600's) using it as a safety while at the same time applying to HYP, the cutoff number if applicants is not going to radically change, it will just me more high scoring kids making the cutoff (I hope that this makes sense).

whereas smaller and private schools can use a more wholistic approach in examing a candidate.

These are her last Princeton Review Practice tests scores.

I hope she improves a little on Saturday.

I don't really know if she is so definite on majoring in Film. She just happened to throw it out there. I know bio or chem is a definite

Sophie Davis at City College --elite pre-med program.
Notre Dame --great film school.

Your D should take a good look at Northwestern U. Northwestern is considered the "hidden gem" among top schools since they have several "departments and schools" that are excellent.

Radio, TV, Film are excellent.
Journalism,
Arts and Sciences,
Engineering,
HPME are excellent.

Very few schools look at scores on SATs as more than indicators of where the student is compared to others. GPA and rigor count more than anything.

If she must take the SATs again an excellent book is the
"Rocket Review Revolution" by Adam Robinson.
D achieved a 2300+ on New Sat studying this particular book.
She received a 12 on her formulamatic essay.
No SAT prep and an URM--AA.

Don't discount her achievement based upon scores.
Many in my D private school began SAT Prep in 9th grade to achieve high scores. Colleges are very much aware of this practice.

Sophie Davis Program requires 95 avg and the ACT. It is very hard to get into this program. I llok into the mentioned book. I don't want her to go past the east coast, Northwestern is too far.
