Minority and Essay Question

Hey, just wondering two things.
1) How much of an impact will the fact that I'm a native hawaiian (pacific islander) help or hurt in the admissions process? I read that 0.1% of last years enrolling class was pacific islander

2) Is it frowned upon to choose essay number 8 for the application? I would like to choose a common app essay to stress my diversity (hawiian/catholic mom, russian/jewish dad, famous athiest brother, born again christian sister in 2nd masters program at Wash U. at age 22, division 1 wrestling brother/leader of Barack Obama univeristy campaign)...good topic?

I think that's a good idea. I honestly think that they don't care what exact question you're answering...they're really more interested on what you make of each question. The entire purpose of essays are to get a true insight on the applicant, what they have to offer, and basically to get a glimpse of the student that they couldn't otherwise see in the application itself.

So yeah. I think that doing number 8 would be fine.

I'm a minority as well and I'm getting that through by answering one of the questions (the friend one). So it really doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you do it...I would say.

Oh yeah. And to answer your first question...it's going to help you.

Just as long as everything else in your academic profile is good.
are you out of state?
or in?

Out of state (new jersey), 4.1 gpa, 630 (cr), 690 (math), 700(writting), 5 on AP stat, 4 on AP gov
3 AP's this year
2 AP's last year
Captain of football team (3 yr starter)
Captain of track team (3 yr. varsity)- All conference high jumper
Executive member of Peer Leaders (2 yrs)
NHS (2yrs)
Lots of volunteer (special olympics, leukimia and lymphoma organization)
Member of Peers Against Narcotics Drugs and Alcohol (2 years)
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
Good recs

awesome. I'd honestly say that you have a good chance. You have an awesome academic profile.

It's just of the course the whole disadvantage of being out of state...
but again the huge advantage of being a minority.

Marc, be careful of how you write your diversity essay. I think talking about your family could be really, really interesting, just make sure that it doesn't come off as you bragging about your family's status, or anything like that. You didn't come off that way in your description of them at all, but I just wanted to put that out there.
