Hi-
The website is really confusing me... maybe i'm just tired from exams. Anyway, does anyone know if you could either double major with an economics/music degree or minor in one or the other? And if so, how hard is it? Thanks.

It is possible to double major with economics and music. But it is very difficult. Both the music and architecture schools are extremely demanding and make double majoring with anything else pretty tough.

That being said, if you come in with a lot of AP or trasnfer credit to make Distribution requirements nil or are willing to take an extra semester or two, you can accomplish it.

As far as minors, I'm pretty sure we don't have one for music or economics at this time, so that option is out.

One option you might want to check in to is a BA in Music rather than a BM. I'm not exactly sure what the difference is, although I think a BA isn't as much work, which may make it easier to double major with something outside Shepherd. I'm not sure about this though -- check with Shepherd for more details. A lot of it probably depends on whether you're a performance major or not.

Hope this helps.

There are only a couple of minors at all right now...one in like business or something and I don't know what else. Really, a minor means nothing regardless of school. You can just take those classes that you would have to get one, though, and then you are learning the same thing.

As for music, if you plan to major in it at all, you pretty much have to come in as a music major (audition). It's doable to double in economics once you get here (might take an extra year), but the hardest part will be getting into Shepherd!

The BA in music is only offered to students who were originally music majors (BM) and then decided they couldn't really do that. You can't be a normal Rice student and elect to be a BA in music. Shepherd is kinda strict.

News: Rice is making a minor in languages. I don't know a whole lot about it, but I think you can minor in any one of several different languages. It's pretty new--I think it was in the Thresher last week or something.

Just Spanish.
